Blair Betts

After the 08-09 season he will be an ufa. I know he has not alot of value cause he has no offenisve skills and is mainly a 4th liner, but he does do the little things block shots, faceoffs, kills penalties, play well down low and along the boards. Any chance we resign him to a new contract, or does he get dealt during the season so a young rookie or kid can take his spot??? i dont want to deal him unless we get an upgrade.

I think it will come down to how well the kids play this year in the AHL. Players like Dupont, Moore, and Pyatt will probably vie for that spot. If one has a good year in the AHL Betts could be supplanted. I don't think he will be resigned until the end of next season.

Betts is a 4th line center personified. I dont see him going anywhere.

Im not saying hes ready to bust out offensively, but lets not forget the majority of his games were played flanked by Hollweg and Orr. Put Betts in the middle of Korpikoski and Sjostrom for a whole season and you might see him pump in a few goals.

He will probably reach free agency in July 2009, but the Rangers will sign him.

Betts is one of the best 4th line centers in the NHL right now. He can win faceoffs, kill penalties, block shots, and chip in the occassional goal. I don't think the Rangers should let him go.

5 years, hmm he is 27 now so that can work. id keep him but if a rookie can add more offense while doing the same little things as betts than betts can go either ufa or traded..

Too much depends on what happens this season to make a decision now. I certainly don't get into a bidding war for a fourth line center. Certainly not one who is devoid of offense.

Very quietly the PK suffered because Betts wasnt full strength out there after the foot problem and surgery.

If they had him full strength against the Pens, it might have been a different story in that series because not only would he have been fresher for those kills, but Gomez and company wouldnt have had to spend that much effort killing powerplays in the series.

I think he is a perfect 4th line center, he wins faceoffs, plays ultra responsible and does the little things like blocking shots extremely well.

The problem with Betts looking long term, is his linemates. Looking into next year he probably wont have a Hollweg/Orr tandem for the most of the season but possibly Korpo/Sjostrom or another winger with Sjostrom. The line has potential to score, and with Betts limited creativity with the puck they might be holding the other wingers back.

We all saw with Korpedo did in one game, he could replace Betts all together down the road and provide most of what Betts can do. But havent seen enough to know if hes a true forth liner or more of a 2nd or 3rd in the NHL.. Probably the latter.

To me, Betts isn't the same player he was before his injury. He never seemed to get his game back, and the PK suffered bigtime in the playoffs as a result, I think.

In all fairness to Betts, he had a bone spur in his foot for the first 70 games.

They said it got so bad that the bone spur wore his skin down and created a hole in his toe and that if he didn't get it fixed they would may have had to remove the toe.

They fixed the hole in his foot, but not the bone spur.

I believe he has to get it fixed still.

Image the amount of pain he was probably in all season, and he played through it.

I could see the Rangers re-signing him during next season no matter what happens with the young players. I think Anisimov will push Drury to the wing eventually and we would have Gomez, Dubinsky and Anisimov as our top three centermen. Every team needs a Blair Betts type and I think it would be a shame to let him get away. He's a good role player who doesn't complain about the job he's asked to do and he does what he's supposed to do well.

Every Stanley Cup winning team has a Blair Betts on the team. I want him here.

I agree also. Too much timer between now and then. Maybe he starts playing poorly? Who the hell knows..but if he has another good three to five left in the tank I do say we keep him around. Unless a kid can do it cheaper. And maybe better.

He'll probably be re-signed before his contract runs out. I'd give him like 3.5m over 4 years no problem. because I don't see Pyatt making the NHL anytime soon.

BB is the man! He should be here for as long as possible. He is the teams bets PKer, wins face offs & for the most part has never had a winger with the same shut dow talent or any offensive skills.

We are so deep at center for the next 4 to 6 years.

That's about the size of it. Betts is a good fourth line player but to play him or pay him as anything more than that is sheer folly. If he will play for what the market pays for a fourth liner, then he should be brought back. If not, then it would be time to move on.

i would sign him for 2 years at 2.1 million total so as to give pyatt some more time to develop because he is going to turn into a BBetts clone with a little more offense

For next season --- I would let Betts walk and sign Chris Kelley to take his spot, a kid who can actually score and play the same defensive hockey Betts plays.

Kelly also has some grit and alot of speed but is not big. id sign kelly to a 3 year deal, he is only 27, gonna be 28 when the season starts.
