learning from Ottawa's mistakes -almost 10 years of futility

For the past 9 years, and 8 postseasons, the team that was 'destined to be' -never was. Though all the embarrassment was to be erased this year with one of the best records in NHL history, things sure turned ugly in January this year.

What went wrong with that team? What could the Habs do in the next 7 seasons to avoid the Senator's fate?

For starters, I think we're on the right track with a franchise goalie. Providing Chipchura progresses as expected he'll add another key element to the team.

Not lose to the Leafs in the playoffs 4 years out of 5?

Oh that didn't really answer your question.

I think we should keep building the way we are and try to add more grit. Our prospect pool is good enough to make up for our current needs. I think we need a star forward and a shutdown centre though. Kovalev won't last forever like this, and Smoke's probably isn't going to stick around.

Losing to the Leafs 4 years out of 5 is now part and parcel
of Canadiana and there's an image to illustrate it:

Definitely more grit up front is needed, as even with Komisarek, O'Byrne and Emelin it's not enough as we saw how miserably the Senators did fail with Volchenkov and Chara.

Exactly. If we could combing the skill and finesse we already have with some grit upfront, we'd be pretty well off.

I'm really hoping that Lapierre can turn into a real **** disturber though. He isn't all that good offensively, so I wouldn't mind seeing him get more into that role.

Ottawa has never had good enough goaltending..... Lalime was just not good enough to bet the starting goalie of a Stanley Cup Champ.... Domenik Hasek was a nice try but an injury and old age ruined that attempt.... Emery was solid one year and it got them close, but he still isn't an elite goalie and this year he blew up.... Gerber is not gonna get it done either.

I like that we have two young goalies right now... one of them should be able to step up and be the kind of goalie every cup champ needs.

The sens of the 2000s and late 90s have a lot in common with the Flyers that overlapped the same time period.... Never got the help in net to get them over the hump.

That and the fact that I don't want this board to become like the bruins' and sens' ones. They always talk about us and put us down. Let's just ignore them.

Sorry I posted too fast though.

Get a goalie that doesn't choke in the playoffs and lose the soft euros.

come on, I'm serious here. I think it's important to look at the failures of other franchises so we don't end up as the team that never had what it takes to go all the way.

Who better to use as an example than one of the top teams from the past decade?

Just wondering, but who's that goalie in your avatar?

Other than the goaltending and the wussy forwards at the end of the 90's and beginning of the 00's, the secret behind Ottawa's failures lies on D. Lack of mobility until last year when they added Preissing and Corvo. But that led to higher turnovers. They tried to backtrack, but then lost mobility and puck moving again.

We have the same problems, but so do a lot of teams. Our goaltending is potentially better, but it's yet to be seen. However, we don't come close in matching their high end talent and have the same grit problems they had until the last couple years. Even more important, we don't have a Mike Fisher type player. Not even close.

We just have to look at our own failures. Our playoff run showed a lot.

Still a more threatening divisional rival than any of the others, though Boston will be there soon, I think. Buffalo would be right up there if their management did not insist on taking huge steps backwards every off-season.

That our rookie goaltender was almost as inconsistent as our young offensive talent. Doesn't do much, really.

Reacting to the cap better once those young players start reaching free agency age. We'll never have as much talent as Ottawa had on the ice with Spezz, Hossa, Havlat, Chara, Redden etc., but hopefully we can manage the cap better to keep more of them.

If they had 10 years of futility...what do we call the Habs last 10 years?
