Best Blu-Ray player

So with my tax refund, I decided I should buy a blu-ray player.

What would be the best one out there? Would getting the PS3 be smart, even if I don't plan on using it too often as a gaming console? Or would getting a stand-alone player be a better idea? If the standalone is a better idea.... which company would you recommend?

Get the PS3. The expense of the players right now makes this the best option.

And ps3 is the only br player that is forward compatible with newer version of BR. I heard older BR players can only play original BR's now

PS3 is the way to go. Even if you don't use it as a gaming console, you'll end up using it as a console.

PS3 for sure. The cost alone should seal the deal in comparison, but then if you ever wanted you have a gaming console, internet browser, music, etc. all right at your disposal to boot.

PS3 is actually the best player too because you can update firmware via internet connection and access online content.

for $399, you'd be hard pressed to find a better BR player on the market... PS3 my friend.

So.. I got a PS3 (and picked up MLB 08: The Show, since I heard it's amazingly fun).

I also bought Training Day, and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.

As someone who was in a similar boat (not the biggest gamer, but, wanted a Blu-Ray player), I bought the PS3, and, have used it a lot more for things other than the Blu-Ray player. Actually, because I'm not big into buying movies any more (after I've realized that in very few instances do I ever watch a movie I own more than twice), I've only watched one Blu-Ray DVD on my machine. The rental availability at most stores absolutely suck.

I've used it for gaming more than I thought I would. But, I've also used it as a media server, with the internet connection it has. I can connect to my media files on my computer remotely, as well as using it as a browser.

Though the PS3 is the best blu-ray player you can get now, be warned that it probably won't work with your universal remote since it doesn't support IR.

You can't go wrong with a ps3, it has so much more to offer then just a movie player.

If you like baseball, you'll be on MLB 08 like its crack. Good choice

I have 2k8 on xbox 360. It's okay, but I just keep hearing about how great The Show is. I'll play it after supper.

The Show is incredible. How come you didn't invest in Grand Theft Auto though? That'd be better than Training day and J&SBSB.

Not a fan. I bought it on xbox at first, and played for an hour or two, then I sold it to my friend. It's not really my type of game. I pretty much only play sports.

I have played 2k8 on the 360 and I own MLB The Show on ps3. It is like night and day. 2k8 was crap compared to The Show. It's a game that lives up to the hype.

Yeah, it's no contest. 2K8 is just garbage.

You need to get into the road to the show option as soon as you get into the game.

I hit 85HR's drove in 200+ RBI's, stole 150+ bases, hit for a .595 average, 23 triples, 75 doubles all in double A and I they didn't move me up to the Bigs, all I got was a promotion to Syracuse the next season where I've been lights out too, but the Jays insist on keeping Eckstein as their starting stop.

I'm 2nd year with the Yankees RF, 4th RTTS year, back to back World Series MVPs, AL MVP, Silver Slugger, Hank Aaron Award, Gold Glove, set record in stolen bases...

and still earn like 325,000 a year.

I am closing for the Chicago Cubs. I don't remember my stats though, I haven't touched it since GTA came out.

The PS3 is not the "best" Blu-Ray player but it is certainly the most versatile and cost-efficient option out there, by far.

Unless you're willing to drop some big coin on a $2000 Denon machine the PS3 is the way to go.

Downside is that since it uses bluetooth, your current universal remote will be useless. This is a huge problem with me, but I guess most other people probably wouldn't mind.

The bluetooth remote for PS3 is only about $20 now I think - so not that big of a deal.

I agree with everyone else tho, defnitely get a PS3. BluRay, Games, Media Centre, Internet...
