well, it was a bit more than I predicted; however, it's also for double the contract length... I have faith in Poile.

Good deal for both sides. Some may say that it's an overpayment, but it won't be with the way contracts are going up.

Will this hurt the preds chances to sign both Weber and Suter?

What an idiotic signing. 7 years at that money for Martin Erat? Good god....these are the types of deals that completely screw up the system.

What an absurd contract both in length and in money... Makes the Fisher deal look like a steal for Ottawa.

Too much for Erat. That contract will hurt in years 5, 6 and 7.

This is ridiculous

These long term contracts are quickly getting out of hand. I can understand for a guy like Ovechkin but Erat ? Nothing against him as a player but as i said this is just getting ridiculous.

But hey the cap is going up right ?

I don't understand the uproar. 4.5 million is a lot now...in seven years, not so much. in TWO years not so much. He's gotten better every year. He's been close to 60 points the past two years (57,57) as a second line player...so what's the problem? 4-4.5 million is the going rate for an elite second line player..which is what I consider Erat. When all is said and done, if he averages 60-70 points a season, while continuing to improve defensively and find his niche as a goalscorer in addition to playmaker.

he's 26 now ... and has yet to crack 60 points in a season ... he had a better year two seasons ago ppg-wise ... last season was a step back in my book

Exactly. It's about a million high now, but as the cap rises it'll even out. Erat is also still young enough that he can still improve, the guys is 26 afterall, just entering his prime.

Depends on how many UFA years their new contracts eat. I'd say $4.5M/yr is probably reasonable for both... 5 year deals.

7 years is a long NHL contract... especially for Erat.

Two seasons ago when he was playing on the first line with Paul Kariya, and getting first unit PP time?

And he would have cracked 60, and probably 25 goals as well, if he had played the full 82 games this season. He missed 8 games, and really it was worse than that given it took him a while to get back to his usual play after being injured.

He finished 68th in scoring among forwards...first line numbers IMO.

If he was an UFA, no doubt. But with the draft compensation associated with RFA's, I doubt he gets too much

New structure to contracts seems to go like this...

If a player can score over 25g or near 60p or has that potential then they get 3.5 Million a year no questions asked.

If any more than 2 years of UFA time are eaten up in the contract year, tack on another 1-1.5 Million a year to the contract.

Increase the contract dollar amount by ridiculous amounts for very small increases in production. 1.5 Million per 5 extra goals a year seems about right.

Anyone want to predict Jason Pominville's contract next year? It's going to start at around 6 Million a year.
