There were plenty of 25-goal scorers getting $4M last year, pretty much all the young guys got 4M+ (Hartnell, Penner, et al) and Erat is a 1981 so he is in that group still IMO.

7 years is a long deal though, I think I would have shot for four but at the same time if he stays healthy/productive that will be a steal five or six years down the line if salaries keep growing.

The usual reactions above, it's either great or terrible, right? To me it's just OK.

what does it mean that it does not conform to the Collective Bargaining Agreement? (Like for this contract?)

there is a rule in the CBA that states that from any contract year to the next the numbers can't drop more than 50% in any one year

I don't think that this is overpayment. Erat is a potential 30-goal, 60-point player, and that will warrant at least 4M in the open market. With the way salaries are escalating, 5 or 6 years from now this guy could be a viewed at a 4.5 mil as a steal. If this were a 2 or 3 year deal I would agree that it is overpayment but i think longterm Nashville made a good move.

Linkage? ever heard of it. It basically gaurantees that the owners make a profit.

GMs have to really think about when they hand out salaries and build around a core group of players. Just seems weird that the Preds would choose Erat and risk losing a guy like Weber, whom along with Radulov is their core.

They're in no danger of losing Weber. Poile said he'd match any offer sheet, but neither side intends to let it get that far. There's been steady updates about contract talks.
