Why would PITT do this trade

Staal is a big 6'4 220lb Centre. Great skater, great skills, great PK, has goal scoring ability. Scored 29 as a 18 year old. I don't care what people say 29 at 18 is very very very good! He fits in perfect at Pitt right now. Later on down the road when his offensive game comes full circle, watch out!

1. Pens traded their 2nd pick to get Gill.

2. No.

Pens aren't trading Staal now. Summer 09, maybe, but if they need cap room I see Whitney more likely to be the odd man out.

Why trade a top 2 pick in Staal for a 4th overall pick this year? Makes no sense

I could see it happening, but only if Pittsburgh can't sign Malkin. Staal is a great young player, but he's a center, which is something the Penguins are very well stocked with. The number four pick would yield an excellent defenseman, or maybe Filatov. Imagine Filatov on Malkin's wing...

if I was the Pens i'd do it...

They are trading Staal for one of Filatov (winger) or the Big 4 D-man which they need more than a center. plus Lee Stepniak, and Ion Cole. and that #4 pick has a very good chance at being better than Staal

could be a steal for the pens depending on which of the big D-men they liked best, or went ahead of #4 ...but a guaranteed stud D-man for a center that you cant afford after signing Malkin and will end up trading for a loss later (unless he regains 30 goal touch), or losing as a RFA

I can see this trade happening. If it does happen it would benefit Pittsburgh more as at #4 they'd get one of the big 4 defenseman which is something the team needs.

Why can't the Pens afford Staal after Malkin again? Not to mention what you're saying is the Pens should take a NHL player that the Penguins love and trade him for what is currently a non-NHL player that'll take some time to develop and once he does he'll want as much money as Staal putting us right back in the same situation. I'm not sure if you noticed but they're 1 win away from the cup finals, now is not the time to be rebuilding.

I'd rather keep our gigantic, successful, promising center, thanks.

No way the Blues do this. Why would we trade a top 5 pick for a former top 5 pick and then throw in a young, cheap former 27 goal scorer and another former 1st round pick? The Blues are rebuilding and need to be ADDING young talent, not trading it away in a 3-for-1 deal for a player who I don't even feel will live up to his #2 overall selection.

A more fair proposal would be Staal straight up for #4 overall or just add a mid-round pick. The Blues are giving up WAY too much in the original proposal.

Staal is a great young player, however did you look at what was coming back in the proposed deal?

4th pick overall: Filatov or one of the "big 3" d-man is pretty close to value for Staal
Ian Cole: Great young d-man prospect that was a top 20 pick last year
Stepniak: A legit scoring line forward who would be a huge upgrade for next years team if Hossa isn't resigned

I realize that Staal has a ton of potential, but you can replace a great 3rd line checking center (which is Staal's role for the forseeable future), but it's a lot tougher to get the young studs for the blueline.

I think it was more lucky than good. Just look at his shooting percentage last season. He obviously couldn't maintain it this year. How many assist did he have last year? Even Jamal Mayers had more assists than Staal.

From a blues standpoint no way... I wouldn't even want to trade our 1st round pick for him...

For the purposes of this dissection, i will assume that Pitt has the pick that they lack to make this deal feasable.

Anyway, I truly doubt that St. Louis does this. Staal had a great rookie campaign, but seems to be evolving more into a solid shut down guy. If they were looking for a future offensive stud to lead their forwards, I doubt Staal would be the guy they overpay for. I say that as a Pens fan.

And as a Pens fan, I would absolutely pull the trigger on a trade like this. It seems like a gross overpayment for a guy that, in my mind, is still an unknown quality. The only reservation I have on it is the fact that Staal, who is evolving into a great shut down guy, wont command the same kind of money a stud #1 Defenseman will down the line. This makes him a better fit in the salary structure of a team with many young, future starts to give a big payday to.

Thats provided, of course, that he doesnt hit the 29 goal mark again, which obviously I hop he does.

Long story short, the promise of Bogosian/Schen/Doughty as well as Stempniak for Staal is mighty mighty tempting, but not the best financial decision. If this even has a remote chance of happening, which it doesnt

It all depends on what they do with Hossa. If they keep Hossa. One of Staal/Malkin/Fluery is gone.

I would seriously consider this trade. From past posts everything makes sense. I like Staal, very good defensivly but in the future I just don't see him fitting in. But again lets not jump to conclusions, the Pens are a game away from reaching the Stanley Cup Finals and four games from winning it all!

Why, has he been offered up in a trade by our GM??

He's not successful OR promising? I guess that's why YOU'RE not a GM.
