Selanne's been rumored in Montreal since the first time he was a UFA, and he never came here. He said many times that he wanted to stay on the West Coast. He'll stay in Anaheim or retire IMO.
Actually, it predates that.
When Selanne was being shopped by the Winnipeg Jets, and the Mighty Ducks ultimately acquired him, Selanne was rumoured to Montreal.
The problem with that rumour - and apparently Serge Savard did investigate it - was the Jets were adamant that in dealing Selanne they were going to bring in a blue-chip defenseman.
The Canadiens, at that time, didn't have the right fit - a bluechip YOUNG defenseman - the Jets didn't want cash.
They apparently turned down a deal that would have netted them Sergei Zubov and a forward (by some reports, Petr Nedved) instead opting for the youthful pair of Oleg Tverdovsky and Chad Kilger.
The deal received mixed reivews at the time. I recall the late John Ferguson commenting "Would you trade Teemu Selanne for Paul Coffey and Mark Messier, because that's what Anahiem may have just done."
For how many years these rumours involving Selanne have been trashing this board? Eklund is just making things.
E2 Selanne to MTL = World Championship + the friendship + Montreal media
Mtl media has nothing to do with this rumour, Unless Eklund said that's what his source is.
Any UFA to MTL makes sense these days, seeing as we finished 1st in East.
If Briere was a UFA this year, itd be E5 to Mtl.
Don't see why Selanne would be impossible now. Only reason im skeptical is because he said he wanted to stay in West and play for ANA or retire.
Oh, and that its coming from Eklund of course makes it even less credible unfortunately. But he's bound to get one right one day
