Thanks. I had really hoped that he would work out at Yale, but he just couldn't consistently stay in their lineup. He didn't produce the way that guys like Backman, Little and Arcobello did (I know, you don't know these guys. Trust me, these guys were all great for Yale last year). Ever since I heard he was going to Manitoba, I had hoped that maybe he could bring it altogether there, but I guess not.

WEEKEND PREVIEW
MANITOBA BISONS
v REGINA COUGARS

The Bisons are in the Capital of Banjoland for a pair of games Friday and Saturday nights this weekend. My suspicion is that this will be yet another split. The preview on Bison site is [HERE]. Other useful links are:

ANOTHER WEEKEND OF SPLITS
... but Bisons still get 3 points!

October 17-18, 2008

I never had a chance to do a Friday night wrap-up, so this is a double feature.

MANITOBA BISONS 2
REGINA COUGARS 3

in a shoot-out
[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

MANITOBA BISONS 7
REGINA COUGARS 1

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]
[U OF M STORY]

In the Friday night game the Bisons could only muster 20 SOG and lost the game on a shoot-out. Bisons scorers were Calin Wild (back in the line-up) and Kyle Howarth (showing d\good improvement and getting more ice time this year).

Saturday's game appears to have been a chippy encounter, perhaps due to the one-sided scoreline. The Bisons' leading scorers were Mike Hellyer (2 & 2), Howarth (1 & 3) and Rick Wood (1 & 2). Other Bison goal scorers were Cole HUnter, Nick Hotson, and Jon Cara. Regina's lone goal came in the last minute of play, thus spoiling Steve Christie's bid for a second SO this year. Incidentally, Christie went the distance both games whilst Brant Hilton sat both games for the Puddy-Tats.

The 3 point weekend has the Bisons at least temporarily in 2nd place at 3-3-2. However, the only sub-.500 team (given the OTL rule) is UBC at 1-3-0.

The Huskies have lost to Regina, Manitoba, and now Lethbridge on consecutive weekends. Maybe a sign that the league will be a lot tighter this year? Traditionally Alberta and Saskatchewan pull away from the pack as the year moves on.

Huskies are struggling with consistency. Have had some tough outings from both of their goaltenders. Coaches seem be to be oblivious to defensive discipline, as they have had 3 games in the last 3 weekends where they have given up 8 goals, 7 goals and 7 goals respectively. Lot's of rumblings coming out of Saskatoon regarding the mediocre start. We will have to wait and see what happens. Big test this weekend at home against U of A.

WEEKEND PREVIEW
MANITOBA BISONS v UBC THUNDERBIRDS

The Bisons venture out to British California for a pair of games in the Tweety-Birds' new Birdcage. The spiffy new rink is built for the Olympic games.

The 'Birds are off to a 1-3 start. They opened with a win over Calgary then were blown out 10-1 in the rematch. The Evil Monkeys from Saudi Alberta then swept them last weekend. If the Bisons could manage a 3 point weekend they could almost bury the 'Birds and put themselves in the driver's seat for at least a playoff berth.

The Bisons swept the 'Birds 4 straight in the regular season and two straight in the quarter-finals.

Hey Hollywood...you're sort of the resident CW hockey buff - any idea what the status is on Aaron Sorochan? He hasn't played for a few games now, but IIRC, finished the period in which he sustained the injury vs Calgary.

Danged if I know. All you can do is check the U of A site.

Riley Dudar and Cole Hunter scored for the Bisons, two players getting increased playing time this year after having been part-timers the last 2 years. Nevertheless, the loss gives the Tweety-Birds some life. Had they lost, they would have been in grave danger of falling from contention early.

BISONS SWEPT
... miss chance to bury a rival

October 25, 2008

MANITOBA BISONS 2
UBC THUNDERBIRDS 3

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

This was a crazy one. The Bisons were down 1-0 in the 3rd period and went on a power play. They proceeded to give up 2 shorthanded goals before getting one back from Mark Olafson. That was all in the space of 57 second. Then a minute later Mike Hellyer made it 3-2. The ensuing late flurry produced nothing but oooohs from the Manitoba bench as the Tweety-Birds clung to much needed sweep, thus evening their record at 3-3 whilst the Bisons sink to 3-5-2.

Beller is still with the Bisons, he is waiting to be deemed eligible. he needed to sit out one calendar year from the last game that he played in the NCAA, I think that is in early to mid November. He, along with a healthy Delaronde, will be great additions to the Bison lineup. What we seem to be lacking is some depth on the blueline.

OK, well one more player who might help never hurts. Also missing in D has been the captain, Kip Workman.

BISON PREVIEW/UPDATE

MANITOBA BISONS @
BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS

The teams play Friday and Saturday nights. The Bisons' site does not have a preview. The teams play at least one game most years, always in Bemdji. In recent years Bemidji has moved to NCAA Division 1 and in that time are 3-2-1 against Manitoba. They knocked UND out of the playoffs a couple years back.

HERD LOSE ANOTHER
... but this one was exhibition

October 31, 2008

BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS 7
MANITOBA BISONS 0

[STATS] <> [STORY] <> [GAME NOTES (pdf format)]

With the Bisons slumping, a non-conference weekend was definitely called for. A close game was blown open in the 2nd period when BSU scored 4 unanswered goals. Kip Workman made his return to the Bisons' D while Gavin McHale (kind of a combination of The Love Boat and McHale's Navy, I guess) got a chance to play goal.

UBC THUNDERBIRDS 2
LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 7

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

This is UBC. They get a sweep of Manitoba (a main rival in the standings) one weekend and then get soundly thumped the next.

CALGARY DINOSAURS 4
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 2

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET] <> [CW STORY]

This was an upset, for sure. However, this goes to show you what a goaltender can to be an equalizer. The Puppies outshot Barney and His Friends 41-21.

REGINA COUGARS 1
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

The Evil Monkeys had to work hard for this one. They also had a big SOG lead, 41-22. Brant Hilton (former South Blue) was in the Regina goal.

ANOTHER SWEEP
... now back to league play

November 1, 2008

BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS 4
MANITOBA BISONS 2

This was a tight one throughout. Tied 1-1 after 2 periods, there were 4 goals on only 12 3rd period shots. Rick Wood and Stewart Thiessen scored for Manitoba.

Another series, another split. I guess that stands to reason.

CALGARY DINOSAURS 3
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 5

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

The Puppies bounced back to gain a split at home. This also puts them in first place, however they have played 12 games and the rest have played either 8 or 10 games.

REGINA COUGARS 1
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

Second verse, same as the first. A pair of tight one goal losses for the Kittens, and not even an overtime game where they could salvage a point.

In fact, there were no overtime games on the weekend. So with a weekend off the Bisons don't lose too much ground. The Bisons are in a 4-way tie for 4th place at 8 points, tied with Calgary, UBC, and Lethbridge.

Less then strong performance vs Regina this weekend for the Bears, but at least Sorochan is back in net after missing the first 4 weeks with an ankle sprain, so they may not need to score as many when he is in net.

NEW RECRUIT: TYLER DITTMER

[Bison menís hockey team recruits WHLís Tyler Dittmer for 08-09 season ] - This is the link at the U of M site, which has all the stats. He was the leading scorer for the Wheaties.

[Bisons thrilled to land 'game-breaker'] - The Winnipeg Sun has a story, which includes this:
Quote:
...

Good news for Don MacGillivray's program, who put forth a total team effort to land Dittmer.

"A big reason why is because some of the players we have who helped recruit him," the head coach said. "Mike Hellyer and Kip Workman, two Brandon guys did a real good job talking to Tyler about the pros and cons of coming to Manitoba.

"We're really excited. He's a game-breaker. I remember watching his last year in Prince Albert. I left feeling like he was the best player on the ice."

Dittmer will join the Herd Dec. 27. Manitoba (3-5-2) travel to Calgary this weekend to face the Dinos (5-3-0). ...
And beside the story are some awesome links to SUNshine Girls. [Wednesday] [Saturday] [Sunday] [Monday]

BISONS SCORE BIG ROAD WIN
... tie Barneys for 3rd place

November 7, 2008

MANITOBA BISONS 3
CALGARY DINOSAURS 0

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET] <> [C.W. STORY]

This was a key win for Herd tonight. After being swept by UBC they were down to 3-5-2 and in danger of being left to scramble for a lowly playoff berth in the 2nd half of the season. This big win gives them at least a temporary tie for 3rd place with the Dinos. However, the Dinos have two games in hand.

Bison goal scorers were Calin Wild, Kyle Howarth, and Cole Hunter. All 3 are MJHL grads! Howarth now leads the team in scoring with 5 goals and 7 assists. Cole Hunter's goal was also his 5th. He only has one assist! Steve Christie must have been impressive in net with a 33 save shut-out.

BISONS SWEEP DINOS!
... and get help to solidify 3rd place

November 8, 2008

MANITOBA BISONS 4
CALGARY DINOSAURS 3

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]
[U OF M] <> [U OF C]

This key sweep on the road could be a turning point in the Bisons' season. Especially after being swept at UBC two weeks ago. The Herd is now 5-5-2 and the Dinos are 5-5-0 in the race for 3rd place.

I was following the live updates available on the [LEAGUESTAT] page as the game progressed. It was a back-and-forth affair. Jered Walker scored the only goal of the 1st period to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd period, Calgary took a 2-1 lead before Cole Hunter tied it up. (That's 6, count 'em, 6! goals for Hunter this year.) An early 3rd period goal restored Calgary's lead. However Riley Dudar and then d-man David Brown (with hist 1st goal) gave the Bisons the win.

In a game in which the sides split 8 minor penalties throughout, the you-know-what hit the proverbial fan at 19:55 of the 3rd period. Three players on each side got themselves 10 misconducts. Once the recap links are updated I'll be interested to see just what happened.

Elsewhere ...

LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 1
ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 9

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

The Evil Monkeys must have scared the 'Horns silly to beat them so badly. Like on Friday, they jumped on them early, this time scoring 4 goals in the 1st period. However, on Friday the 'Horns' held off future attacks and played them even in the 2nd and 3rd periods. The Evil Monkeys are now 8-2-0 and the 'Horns are 4-6-0.

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 4
UBC THUNDERBIRDS 2

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

UBC fought back from a 2-0 1st period deficit to tie the game. However, a late goal by the Huskies gave them a lead and then an empty-netter salted the game away. Sask is now 9-4-1 and top of the table. UBC is 4-6-0 and in a 3-way tie for 5th with Regina and Lethbridge.

Woooo good to see the bears give an asskicking to the pronghorns this weekend.

Seriously though Lethbridge needs to stop complaining about every single penalty/offside called against them. Every game I have seen from them is a chippy affair. Both games Lethbridge were out classed. The friday game after the first was just choppy and no one could get much going. Couple of posts for the bears stopped the game from being similar to the saturday one.

LOOKING BACK:

There are lots of links pertaining to last weekend's sweep of the Dinos by the Bisons. Here they are:LOOKING AHEAD:

Alberta Golden Bears @ Manitoba Bisons

Friday, November 14, 2008 @ 7:00 pm - Max Bell Arena
Saturday, November 15, 2008 @ 7:00 pm - Max Bell Arena

Links:Last meeting: 2007-08 semi-final:Outlook:
  • For anybody looking for a good game to watch this weekend, this is the series to choose. The Bisons are hosting the defending national champions. After I had to miss the Sask series due to having Moose tickets that Friday and a family Thanksgiving event that Saturday, it has been ages since I have seen the Bisons play live.

The last time these two teams met was in last year's playoffs, at which time the Bisons put up a great fight but lost in 2 straight. The Evil Monkeys then went on to destroy Sask to win the conference and then won the national title.

Alberta is the perennial Canada West leader. They are off to an 8-2-0 start this year and seem destined for another run at 1st place. Their only losses were to Calgary and Sask, both as part of a weekend split series.

The Bisons are at 5-5-2 and have taken over 3rd place, which would likely be their goal for the end of the season.

Of note, the Bisons have 4 scorers in the league's top 15 (Kyle Howarth, Mike Hellyer, Rick Wood, and Riley Dudar, all of whom have between 10 and 12 points so far).

This could be a series where goaltending will be a factor. Aaron Sorochan of the Evil Monkeys has come back from an injury and is 5-0-0, having surrendered 5 goals in his 5 starts. Meanwhile, Steve Christie ranks 3rd in GAA and save percentage and just won Athlete of the Week.

He starts December 27th. I think he just enrolled and has not yet started classes.

HERD TRAMPLES EVIL MONKEYS
... in a shoot-out

November 14, 2008

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 1
MANITOBA BISONS 2

IN A SHOOT-OUT
[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]
[C.W. STORY] <> [U OF M STORY]

What a game!

My forecast on the goaltending proved to be bang-on. Aaron Sorochan (of the Evil Monkeys) and Steve Christie (of the Herd) each surrendered but one goal through 65 minutes and then combined to stop 9 of 10 shots on the shoot-out. The decider was scored by Bison Rick Wood.

Alberta carried the play for the 1st period and the beginning of the 2nd. Ben Kilgour had a goal early in the 2nd to give them a 1-0 lead. However, the Bisons controlled play fairly well for the end of the 2nd period and tyhe beginning of the 3rd period. David Brown scored in the last minute of the 2nd period on a point shot from just outside the circles. The play exposed an Alberta vulnerability which was almost exploited earlier in the game. As the play moves to one side the Evil Monkeys often leave a player wide open and unchecked just outside the slot and inside the blue line. Brown was able to get a shot away before Sorochan could get back to his side.

Whenever a team gets two points off the defending national champs and perennial powerhouse they have to be happy. At the same time, the four squads chasing the Bisons must be gnashing their teeth.

On the shoot-out, all but one Alberta shot was stopped by Christie with the middle of his pads. The shooters for them were #17 McDonald, #11 Rayn, #27 Klassen, #14 Mahovsky, and #19 Kilgour. Manitoba's first two shooters (#6 Spiller and #16 Walker) hit the post. #18 Kornelsen and #25 Hunter were then stopped before #27 Wood got the winner.

The teams lined up like this:

Manitoba:
Goal:
Christie (McHale)

Defence:
Lamoureux - Lenoski
Thiessen - Rumsey
Spiller - Brown

Forwards:
Waker - Benias - DeLaronde
Howarth - Hellyer - Wood
Walker - Wild - Olafson
Hunter - Kornelsen - Dudar

Scratches:
G: Lobb
D: Workman - Lindsay
F: Beller - Hotson - Cara -Mistelbacher

Alberta:
Goal:
Sorochan (Cyr)

Defence:
Fransoo - White
Szaszkiewicz - Price
Agnew - Fecho

Forwards:
Gimblett - McDonald - Kilgour
Zalasky - Hunter - Gardner
Pess - Mahovsky - Metcalfe
Klassen - Rayn - Woolger

Moments before the goal!

Elsewhere ...

UBC THUNDERBIRDS 0
REGINA COUGARS 2

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

Brant Hilton (former South Blue) got the 27 save shut-out. The Cougars had their 2 goals on a mere 19 shots. Chalk one up for the goaltender. The Tweetybirds are now in sole possession of last place. Had the Bisons even split their series in British California, the Tweetybirds would really be in a hole.

LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 2
CALGARY DINOSAURS 1

[BOX SCORE] <> [RECAP] <> [GAME SUMMARY] <> [GAME SHEET]

This one completed the set of low-scoring, tight hockey games in the CW this weekend. And other where the winning goaltender came up big. The Dinos outshot the H0rny Ones 38-36 but could only score once. The two sides are now level at 5-6-0 and are tied with Regina at 10 points each.

Next up:
  • November 15, 2008
    Alberta @ Manitoba
    Calgary @ Lethbridge
    UBC @ Regina
    bye: Saskatchewan
