I believe the only comparison I made between Blake & Malone was that Malone, like Blake could land an over the top contract, based on one good season.
Now if someone can guarantee that Malone will continue his pace of play, I say do it.
But I question how much Crosby or maybe moreso, Malkin's talents have to do with Malone's good season??
Hagman on the other, is more of a two way player with some skill, but how much grit does he bring?
IMO we need more grit on the wings( maybe a replacment for Kovalev), power at center & more experience on D, without giving up too much in those particular areas the team already has for too much extra $$$.
Man your arguments are so one sided. I love how you bunch players like Hagman, Malone and Blake together because you believe that they have had only one good year and will all of a sudden suck for the rest of their career. No he did not have a good playoffs, it happens, just because a player gets cold doesn't mean he is a write off. Points aren't everything either, he was getting chances, doing the right things, making good plays but not producing. So because Higgins doesn't always finish his plays does that mean we should just trade him? Dallas does not have the same 1st and 2nd line depth that we have. A third line of Higgins-Chipchura-Hagman would be absolutely dynamite IMO, and they could be effective at both ends of the ice. There is more to signing a player than just looking at his stats. You need to project where he will play on the roster, how he will fit in, and what he can bring to the team. I think Hagman would be a great fit on our team despite him "being the next Blake" as you say, just like Malone will be, Hah.
Did higgins just suddenly have one good year at producing?
You also have to look at the fact that Hagman won't be cheap. You also have to look at the fact that he more than likely won't like being on the 2nd line, not really a big factor, could cause him to be unhappy.
I agree, Chipchura, Higgins, Hagman would be a much more better shutdown line than the one we had this year, but Gainey is looking for a good top 6 forward first. If he can't acquire one through trade, or free agent signing, then getting secondary players, such as Hagman would help.
I don't think Malone will be, but has the potential. Hagman may be good defensively as well, but Malone is a big body, tough, willing to fight, which Montreal needs more than Hagman.
Though, Malone will probably demand something ridiculous like upwards of 4 mill. Hagman, after his almost 30 goal season will want something like 3 mill maybe? Maybe even more and push towards the same as Malone.
You have to look at players abilities AND team needs.
Not to keep going in circles but the Columbis Dispatch has an article today where the Sharks have Marleau available. Any interest this time around? Trade value doesn't sound as high as most think. Sharks asking for prospects and picks. Want to dump salary....Marleau has a no-trade clause which kicks in July 1

I would if the price isn't high. He had a below average year, but we know he can be good. Speed and size down the middle, he would fit well. I'd have him play with Kovalev, give each other space.
Centennial year ahead, Habs going for it all: it all starts NOW!!!
Well, guys, this is it, call 2008-2009 whatever you like, Centennial year, 5th year of Bob Gainey’s 5-year plan, year when all our prospects mature, etc, this is supposed to be THE year where the Habs are no longer content trying to make the playoffs (which has been their credo for the past 15 years), but supposedly want to go for it all.
No more conservatism, no more procrastination, no more “we tried hard but came out empty”, a little boldness, this IS the year after all…
And if this IS the year, the 2-week period from just before the draft to the 1st few days of July when the big UFAs are signed is where it all gets done, so we are in for the most exciting 2 weeks in a long time!!!
- The Habs will make the final four in the Sundin Race
- The Habs will fall short 20 minutes before Hossa signs with another team.
- The Habs will get Selanne to visit Montreal but his plane will get stuck in Toronto so he gets to visit that city and falls in love with it.
- The Habs will sign a has-been who already had great potential but isn't worth **** anymore, I call Bertuzzi.
