The Offseason thread

I'm actually surprised that we don't have such a thread for now.

I don't know if the mods think there is a need for it but I think that we could use this thread to discuss about what we would like to happen this offseason.

Who will stay?
Who will go?
What to do with our 1st round pick?
What trade(s) would you make?
Who would you sign?

Basically, you're the GM. How do you see your Montreal Canadiens for next seasion?

EDIT: I will post my opinion later today.

Well...

First, I think/hope that Andrei Kostitsyn will be the absolute priority. With the possibility of an offer in Russia and his RFA status, we don't want to see him unsigned on July 1st. Like other posters said, a longterm contract like Dustin Brown would be nice. Like it or not, we have a lot of good young players with the team and in the system, but Andrei is by far our most talented young player and we couldn't afford to lose him.

For the other RFA's, I don't think that Gainey will have any problems to re-sign them.

It will also be interesting to see what will happen to our UFA. Michael Ryder is 100% gone and I would be surprised to see Smolinski back. He was a good presence in the playoffs but the truth is that he sucks all season long. We can't afford to keep him when we have Chipchura waiting for a spot. Patrice Brisebois will be an interesting case during the summer. IMO, he will be back as the 7th d-man of the team. That said, he isn't a priority for now.

Mark Streit should be the second priority of Gainey. BG has to decide if he wants Streit as an utility player or as a d-man. If he wants him as an utility player, there's no point to discuss a contract with him unless he is ready to take a HUGE discount to stay with the team. Personnally, I would offer him a 12M$/4years contract. I would give him a spot as the 4th d-man and it would be to him to keep the spot. It would be my last offer. If he prefers to hit the market where he could get over 4M$, I would offer the same contract to Ron Hainsey on July 1st.

Now, who do we want? We keep hearing about Fabian Brunnstrom. I think that Gainey is really interesting in him and even if he is overrated, I have a total confidence in the scouting staff. Ville Leino could be another option to look at.

On July 1st, I hope that Marian Hossa will not be a target. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy but we can't afford him for our future. Gainey will probably give a call to Jagr but I don't think that he will be a Hab next season. In an ideal world and as a hockey fan, I would like to see him sign a contract with the Pens to play with Crosby and finish his career in Pittsburgh. As a management move, it would make sense for the Pens since they can't really afford to give Hossa the longterm contract he wants. With Jagr, they would be able to re-sign Malkin and have money in the future for Staal, Letang, etc.

Brian Rolston will attract a lot of interest if he hits the market. He's a great leader, a goalscorer and a defensive specialist. What else could we ask? Sadly, I'm expecting a bidding war for him so I think that he will be overpaid elsewhere. We need a veteran for the third line and the two real options I see are Cory Stillman and Andrew Brunette.

Will Gainey be able to land the big center we need? I don't really see how he could do that unless Mats Sundin makes some kind of heel turn and signs with the Habs. That's highly unlikely.

Can we expect the unexpected in a trade? If Gainey has the possibility to land a big winger with a reasonable contract, I would be all for it. I wouldn't mind putting guys like O'Byrne, Lapierre and Latendresse on the market for that. We could also afford to trade a couple prospects not named Pacioretty or McDonagh. The guy I would like is Simon Gagné. We could give them a great package and they would be able to retain Jeff Carter without being in a cap hell for the future.

Finally, Dandenault is gone. I'm hoping for a late pick but if not, he will be buyout.

My view of things

Out

Ryder Gone as UFA

Dandy Probly a buyout

Streit I've thought about it, and I don't think he'd worth the money he's going to get if we're going to keep him on our 3rd line

Begin two years in a row this guy takes the season-costing penalty, are we going to have him go for the hat-trick next year ?

Possible Trades

Higgins Its not that I want to trade him, but if I had to give up one of our players with any value, he'd be the guy I'd sacrifice

Lapierre He's basically useless, and if any GM wants to offer us anything for him we should take it. Chipchura is going to be able to do his job anyways much better next season

Halak Its obvious he'll never be given a real chance here, with Jesus Price having already being handed the keys to the city

UFAs

Hossa He's the prime UFA in this year crop, if by miracle he wants to sign with us, do whatever it takes

Huselius Very good player, and very under-rated around here, 2nd option in the very likely event that Hossa doesn't sign here.

Jagr/Demitra/Naslund/Sundin Proven veteran scorers, can replace Ryder's goals, I'd offer them each between 5-7m for 1-2 years depending on the player

Redden/Smith/Campbell An extra solid D couldn't hurt. And it would give soon-to-be UFA Komisarek less leverage to ask for the moon next year.

Rookies

Honestly, I don't know enough about this subject to make educated guess on which rookies will make a strong challenge to stay with the team in October.

I really like your assessment... I just think Brunnstrom's salary will likely be closer to 2million, according to the various rumours i've heard.

Fabian Brunnstrom is GONE... that's quite sad...

If I had the choice:

UFA OUT: Michael Ryder, Bryan Smolinski and Mark Streit

UFA IN: Andrew Brunette, Ron Hainsey and Curtis Joseph

Trades:

Guillaume Latendresse, Ryan O'Byrne and Jaroslav Halak to Philadelphia for Simon Gagné

Mathieu Dandenault to Detroit for future considerations

My lineup:

AKostitsyn-Plekanec-Kovalev
Gagné-Koivu-SKostitsyn
Higgins-Chipchura-Brunette
Bégin-Lapierre-Kostopoulos
*D'Agostini

Markov-Komisarek
Hamrlik-Hainsey
Bouillon-Gorges
*Brisebois

A. Kost - Plekanec - Kovalev
Hossa - Koivu - S. Kost
Higgins - Chipchura - Ryder
Bégin - Lapierre - Kostopoulos
Extra: Stewart

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - Gorges
Bouillon - O'B
Extra: Brisebois

There is a chance of Bob getting a veteran 3rd line C.

I would be curious to know how we could afford Hossa without hurting our team for the years to come. I know that we have a lot of cap space now, but think about Komisarek, Plekanec, Higgins and the Kostitsyn's next contracts.

I would also like to have your thoughts on Ville Leino. For those who saw him play, do you think he could play in the NHL next year?

2008-2009 new Hab's player

OK let's start talking about the 2008-2009 new players, Habs 100th aniversary!

We all know that Gainey is conservative but I think he sill bring us a couple of ufa's next year.

Here is the FWD ufa's that I think Gainey will go for

Brian Rolston (Center or Right Wing) speedy, big all around player
Ryan Malone: Could he be the big scoring guy that we need?
Stephane Yelle: good to replace Smolinski
Dallas Drake: see above
Hossa: please pitts don't sign him
Todd Fedoruk: played good inteligent hockey in Minny
Chris Kelly: see S. Yelle

As for Defence we should aim one of:

Andreas Lilja
Ron Hainsey (a come back??)
Rozival
Kalinin

New rookies in line-up? I think one of Chipchura, G Stewart or Pacioretty (surprise) could land a spot as FWD and one of Valentenko or Yemelin if decide to come in Canada as Def.

Gone baby gone??? I won't be surprised if Smolinski, Brisebois, Ryder and Streit aren't resigned...altought I would do everthing to keep Streit.

I also think that Dandeneault, Begin, Chipchura and Grabovsky could be traded pretty soon to make some place to young guns or UFA's.

My top 5 FWD star ufa priority would be

1. Hossa
2. Malone
3. Rolston
4. Sundin ( i wish)
5. Straka

Top 5 oth fwd ufa:

1. Chris Kelly
2. Jarko Ruutu
3. PAscal Dupuis
4. Andrew Brunette
5. Matt Cooke

top 5 DEF:

1. Campbell
2. Rozival
3. Kalinin
4. Lilja
5. Redden ( will he bounce back???)

I hope Gainey get's Hossa. Not just because he is more than decent offensively, but his defenisive game is superb as well.

I really hope Gainey goes for some grit as well though.

Christopher Higgins(Playing with Koivu, a rookie Kostitsyn/slumping Ryder):

GP82-27G-25A-52PTS

Ryan Malone (Playing with a red hot Malkin/red hot Sykora)

GP77-27G-24A-51PTS

Thanks, but no thanks (considering the payday he will receive).

expensive:

Hossa (go for him, though, no more than $7 mil per)
Selanne (doubt it, but him and Koivu have experience together)
Rolston (consistent, gritty winger, 30 goal scorer)
Huselius (decent goal scoring winger)
Naslund (on the decline, but can still score goals)
Avery (will he really come to this city after having dissed French-Canadians? It would be great, but expect at least $3-4 mil per)
Shanahan (didnt want to come last year, I doubt he will this year, unless he sees us as a winner now)

cheaper:

Holik (gritty 3rd line centre, THE GUY IN FRONT OF THE NET we need)
Peca (leadership, experience, 3rd line centre = perfect!)
Vrbata (great breakout season in Phoenix with 27 G, could score 30+ with Koivu)
Malone (big winger, but may be a bust outside of Malkin's line)
Cooke (hard-nosed winger)

No defensemen are needed with their depth. Maybe resign Breezer for another year juuuust incase.

Markov-Komi
Hamrlik-O'Byrne
Boullion-Gorges

prospects: McDonagh, Yemelin, Valenteko, Weber, Subban, Fischer

Agreed. I just wish Higgins would start using his body more. Both him a Latendresse need to be our "Holmstrom and Franzen".

People are WAY too harsh on Higgins on this site, they expect him to be a first line winger and score 40 goals/80 points.

I never saw him in this light, so maybe thats why I love what he brings to the team. He is streaky, but most hockey players are. He is extremely sound defensively and he brings alot to the table in the offensive zone, but like you said he just needs to use his body more and crash the net and he'd be twice as a effective(which is actually kind of scary).

Upfront all I'd really like to see is maybe Holik added as a 3rd line center and I wouldn't be opposed to Hossa if they price was right (for a 7m per cap hit, like you had mentioned).

We are harsh on him, but only because we expected a 30 goal scorer by now. Hes still a skilled winger overall, and hopefully we can resign him for cheaper than expected when he becomes a UFA.

Him and Lats need to prove something next year, though, in terms of size value.

Rozival, Sundin, Jagr, Roulston, Hossa would all be great. Having additional scoring come from players that arent especially soft would be sweet. Teams would be less likely to key on Saku, Kovy etc.
