Make offers for Whitney and/or Sydor

Pens need to free up salary if they intend to keep Hossa, Orpik, and Malone (not to mention others.)

Pens need:
-08 draft picks to resupply themselves after the deadline deals
-winger prospects
-low salary instigators and enforcers who can play smart 3rd/4th line hockey in case Ruutu, Laraque, and Roberts leave

I like the MacArthur for Sydor trade, as a Pens fan... I imagine though, and I like to think I speak for probably any other Pens fan that comes in here, that the Pens would hopefully look for a 1st round pick (possible plus, depending on what portion of the round) for Whitney... that's probably what the fans would expect to see. I like Kotalik though.

I'd do MacArthur for Sydor if just to free up some $.

Despite playing the part of the pariah for the bulk of the season...and deserving every bit of criticism...I don't see Whitney being traded at this point in his career under any circumstance.

Sydor, however, I fully expect to be actively shopped this off-season...and if I'm not mistaken he has a NTC which will make it rather tricky. I doubt Sydor would pose a huge problem with waiving it if his role on the Penguins isn't going to improve (when the team is healthy he doesn't play...at this stage of his career sitting in the press box can't be the most wonderful thing), but I think it does limit potential trade partners to teams with a decent chance to compete or in places where he'd like to play.

Even with Sydor's issues it's far more likely he's moved than a $4 million a year defender with 5 years left on his deal who is coming off an awful season but has shown he has the talent to be an elite offensive defender in this league.

An '08 draft pick to Pittsburgh just to make sure Sydor doesn't end up back in Dallas.

Sydor for a fourth round pick. Age, salary, and production taken into account... maybe someone more needy offers up a third.

Probably as fair an offer as it could get.

I don't see anyone giving up a roster player for him (nor are there any real holes in the Penguins roster as players are walled up in Wilkes-Barre right now), and he brings enough to the table to be worth more than just a complete salary dump. Sydor is getting paid slightly more than what he brings to the table, but he still has worth. In about half of the games he played he was on Whitney's level of awfulness on defense, but in the other half he was a rock...consistency has been lost with age, but he brings a bit to a team. But then again, he's the Penguins 8th best defenseman (he's our 7th defender at the time being and Eaton is better than all but Gonchar) so expecting anything more than a 3rd rounder from a good team would be asking way too much.

A 4th rounder sounds about right.

Done.

If I was another team, I wouldn't even give up a 7th for Sydor.

makes me laugh, tampa shipped off sydor 2 years ago for a 4th and all we heard was what a bad move it was.

seems like a few more teams have figured it out...he's not what he once was and isn't worth the past 2 contracts he's gotten. and he has an ntc?

Deal. I think it's a longshot for the Pens to get anything in return for him though.

I would like a pick for Sydor...we are very lacking in the draft pick department all of sudden...

By the way, Smid would be an amazing return for Whitney...I'll trade Schremp 5 minutes after I get him before anyone realizes he won't be an NHL regular...but Smid would be a great addition...

What would be funny is if we traded him for a 7th and the 7th became the next Zetterberg.

Nah, because we'd get accused of rigging the draft or Bettman told CSS to intentionally underrate that player so the Penguins could get him...

Make offers for Whitney and/or Sydor

didn't play a single play off game for the pens, this season, is simply the odd man. Makes 2.5 m next year.

Old, left handed, pretty decent d-man.

would like to see a prospect to come the other way.

just offer, I'm interested, what you think he's worth..

I think the pens will get a mid to late round draft pick for him. If they could get a 3rd, I'd be happy, but I doubt they will.

Although if they can't sign Orpik to what they want, they might just keep him.

What team could use him? Especially at his price tag?

I would take anything for him. I don't want to be trapped paying 2/3 of 2.5 million next season.

Sydor will definitely waive his NTC if Orpik or Eaton is re-signed, because he doesn't want to be a healthy scratch forever.

Whitney won't be traded this sumer unless shero wants to sign a few vets to one year deals. I could see him being traded next summer for cap space since the Pens are going to want to re-sign Talbot, Staal, Malkin, Kennedy, Scuderi, Gill, Goligoski, and Sykora.

BTW LOL at me thinking the Pens can keep Hossa, Malone, and Orpik in April.
