Leftys

if anyone here plays roller hockey (or any hockey for that matter)...have you noticed that USUALLY (not always), the left handed players are the best players in your league?

i personally think that righty is just natural to most people and the lefties personally learn to play that way just to be better. dont get me wrong theres a lot of great players in my league that are righties but still

thoughts?

I'm a lefty as well. I'm not big for scoring goals. I'm more of a playmaker. but our sniper. we have like 30 goals, he's scored probably 15-20 of em. He's a lefty to.

Ovechkin, Iginla, Spezza, Alfredsson, Kovalchuk.

Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Iginla, Boyes, Alfredsson.

The first group represents right-handed players in the Top 10 of NHL points.

The second group represents right-handed players in the Top 10 of NHL goals.

Theory debunked.

I dont think he was making the point about NHL players. He was talking about amateurs, not superstar, millionaire hockey players. Its a little different.

In my Inline league there are about 8 left-handed shooters in the leauge, and 6 of them are in the top 10 in scoring. There's about 25 right-handed shooters, and only 4 are in the top 10 in scoring.

I get what you are saying.

too easy....LOL

there was a thread bout this a few months back having to do with Handedness and someone did some research as to why players are lefties, and righties. i will look for it....
I do not think there is any relativity with how good you are and what side you shoot from.

EDIT: Handedness http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=478745
On the second page, post #30 Injektilo had a long but good post and theory

You should be looking at the right or left handedness as well. Most people who shoot left are not actually left handed. A lot of them are right handed. This means that their 'control' hand on a hockey stick, (the one at the top), is actually their right hand, which would be their dominant hand. Stick handling is mostly in the wrist, so a right handed person playing lefty hockey has a stick handling advantage.
But years of practice would probably erode that advantage and people with high skill levels will simply rise to the top no matter which side they shoot.

Here's an idea, the guys who started playing lefty were probably playing for much longer and therefore are probably better. If you started young and in some sort of organized setting when you were younger, you probably started lefty. If you started when you were a teen or in an unorganized setting, you probably started righty and you probably never had the experience these other guys have.

There's a crapload more of lefties than righties if you look carefully.

Right handed shooters that play on the left side actually have a small advantage if they are good shooters, because they can aim for the far side on conventional goaltenders (stick in right hand) and they can expose their glove hands.

Since lefties are more common, some goalies can have a hard time defending a far side right handed shot coming from his right side.

Im a righty and am pretty successful goal wise(especially in inline) on Ice, I think the advantage is stopping on my left side is weaker so i feel I am at a disadvantage when I try and stop on my left and make a quick cut to the center from the left halfwall. If I were playing lefty, it would be easy cause I am alot better on my right side edge and I could cut in off the right wall.

As for shooting, only sometimes do I wish I were a left for certian situations, but like mentioned above, its so easy to exploit glove hands comming in off that left side

Ugh another one of these threads. You either shoot left or right, it doesn't make a difference. That is like saying that people who write with their right hand has neater writing or can draw better. Makes no difference.

Oh and I shoot left and I learnt on my own. I wasn't "forced" to play left handed.
