Proposal; LA Pitt

There is a discussion going on over at LGK. So here it is,

To Pitt, 2nd Overall Pick

To LA, Staal

Most Kings Fan's turned it down, interested what other people think.

Thats tough. I'm leaning on keeping Staal because we know exactly what he's all about. Though, one of those defensemen look pretty tempting.

nope. kings draft bogo or doughty, and get a potential franchise player in our weakest spot.

That is pretty interesting...I'd want a make sure we could acquire a big shutdown center though before I'd make this trade, or at least have a chance to get one via free agency...Staal's reach isn't teachable, ya know?

I figure, if a semi-replacement for Staal comes along, we could take the 2nd overall pick, slide down a couple spots and acquire assets that way, so the trade continues to build upon itself...

Where it ends up being Staal for 8th overall, 48th, 129th and maybe a semi-replacement for Staal...obviously hypothetical and/or unrealistic but it is something to think about...

Actually, the more I think about it, I'm not sure the Pens take that...we spent a 2nd overall pick on Staal in 2006, we already know that he's a more than capable NHLer, why would we take "even money" for him now?

Yeah, ya know what, I don't think so...

[/indesicive rambling]

A pens fan i know keeps calling Staal the next Chris Gratton. a 2nd overall seems as though it'd be a pretty good return.

You just don't know is the thing. I'm looking at it as there is less uncertainty keeping Staal than there is taking that 2nd overall at this point. That 2 might end up being a better player than Staal...you just don't know.

Penguins management has already made Staal part of their future plans, so the Pens would never do the deal. Why would you trade a former number 2 overall that you're happy with, for a chance at redoing the pick when your team is starting to hit their window? That's basically throwing 2 years of development out the window and pushing more of your window into the hands of rookies.

Neither team would probably do this, but the Pens would be upgrading their defense big time.

Kings seem to have a solid offensive core, so they'd be looking to improve their d, no?

I don't think the Kings do it.

The only reason is that D-men are worth more than forwards for the next few years.

So it's basically trading 2 years of development (where Staal was actually useful) for a high-end D-man. In this draft loaded with high-end D-men, you get to pick the BEST one (Stamkos will go first).

I don't think either should make the trade. Kings need that D-man. And the Pens need players now not 2-3 years from now.

No thanks. Our defensive prospects are susepect, so there is no reason to pass up on a franchise defenseman for a guy like Staal.

No thanks. I'm a huge Doughty fan, but the Pens are contenders now due in large part to Staal's irreplaceable (through FA) contributions, and I don't think DD would have the sort of immediate impact that could overcome that loss.

It would be dealing a serious blow to the next 3-5 years of contention for a prospect and a prayer.

Conversely, I don't think LA would do it because they're in need of better prospect depth on the back-end, not currently in contention, and already have a pretty solid young forward corps.

God thats a tough decision to make. Love Staal, love that 2nd overall. Better to leave everything as is.

Why would the Kings trade a franchise defenseman for an (above average) checking center?

I love Staal, I think he is the bomb, but no one is going to give up a guy like Doughty, Bogosian, or Pietrangelo for him

Proven talent > unproven

And I'm pretty sure the Pens have shown that their D is quite capable, some people just don't seem to accept it.

Irrespective of what people think about the value here, that's the kind of trade we just cannot make if we want to be competitive both now and in the long run.
I think Staal is the one of our young superstars who is most certain to be dealt at some point, because his upside is quite a bit higher than third line center, and with us he can never be more than that.
So - in his early to mid 20s most likely he will be dealt for a rich prospect/picks package, and at that time, given his development, he will be too much of an impact player for us to accept merely a high first round pick.

Not saying the proposed deal isn't fair right now in terms of value, but even Doughty isn't going to be a factor immediately for the Pens and most likely won't be until late in his second season at the earliest, whereas Staal is a very important piece in a Stanley Cup contender right now.

Given LA's need for a stud defender and them still being at least a year from really going somewhere, I wouldn't make the deal if I was LA either.
