Bettman on tampering

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playof...e=NHLHeadlines

Quote:
"People who sign contracts can be held to them by the other party to the contract, and there's nothing wrong with that," Bettman said. "If there's tampering going on, ultimately there are no secrets in this world. We will get to the bottom of it. And I'm no fan of tampering. And when it happens, it gets punished severely.

"A team that meddles with an individual under contract could face heavy fines and the loss of draft picks. And an individual who talks to a team while he's still under contract would face fines and a possible suspension."
At the recent State of the Sharks, GM Doug Wilson refused to confirm or deny interest in specific coaches or identify who was on his list of 40 names for the coaching vacancy as tampering could result in "a $1m fine."

(Article also discusses other "state of the league" issues.)

I'm curious to see what happens with this then...

http://cbslocalblogs.prospero.com/n/...ports&entry=25

For those that don't want to click the link, it appears that Pens asst. coach Andre Savard has been contacted by Florida and it is apparently a "done deal" that he will be their new head coach...

This can't be too terribly legal, can it?

That's a bit different of a situation. I saw Bettman's press conference yesterday and the question that prompted that response was a thin allusion to the Burke-Toronto rumor.

In the Savard to Florida case that is an assistant coach being interviewed and possibly hired as a head coach. That happens all the time and my guess the Pens gave the Panthers permission to talk to Savard. In that case it wouldn't be tampering.

From the three paragraph article...

Quote:
"I don't know what's going on there," Penguins GM Ray Shero told The Spec Saturday afternoon adding that no one from the Florida organization has called to ask for permission to talk to Savard

That blog appears to be quoting from this as the first paragraph: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/panther...lumn_0525.html

And from here for part of the second paragraph:
http://www.thespec.com/Sports/article/374470

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/panther...hers_0522.html
This article talks about coaching too.

Bottom line.... It's the pundits who are saying it's a "done deal", not the teams or personnel. (In the situation of Savard and Martin, there's a history of the two working together.)
