Ovechkin: Fedorov Wants to Stay with the Caps

Quote:
"I talked to him, and I know for sure [that] he wants to stay in Washington," Ovechkin said on an NHL conference call from Pittsburgh, where he'll be presented with the Art Ross and Maurice "Rocket" Richard trophies this afternoon. "It's not my job to talk about money and how many years he wants to be there, that's [for] George and Fedorov's agent. He wants to play -- not just with me -- but with [the] Capitals."
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/capit...s_to_stay.html

So it's basically just a money/contract term issue. It doesn't seem like Fedorov plans to retire.

Or this will be the first time a player/agent uses one team to bring up their price to go to Montreal?.....Nah, the status quo's been doing fine. Let the Fedorov's agent talking to Gainey begin.

On a serious note. Good for the Caps, he seems like a nice fit there.

Federov would have to be willing to play for cheap, I would think. With Nylander coming back next year, where would Federov fit in?

A one year deal would be great, if they give him more than 2 years they are CRAZY!

Third line probably. The line would be good defensively and would be a pretty big scoring threat.

Ovechkin - Backstrom - Clark
Semin - Nylander - Kozlov
Laich - Fedorov - Fehr
Brashear - Steckel - Gordon

Something like that. (Those are very rough lines just to give a general idea)

Then he would definitely have to come cheap. Which hasn't been Federov's MO in previous years. He's always gone for the $$

True. But I hope that since he's already made a lot of money and is towards the end of his career, he'll sign for less than he could get elsewhere for the chance to play on a team he really enjoys. If you followed him since the trade deadline, you could see that he was really rejuvenated coming from Columbus (he really playing there, and says so every chance he gets). The Caps could also offer a lot of bonuses since he's reached that age limit.

nautikal,

Those of that have followed Fedorov in DC know that he will not play for a number of teams in the NHL, regardless of the money, at this stage in his career. However, that doesn't mean the Caps would be the only team he would like. I don't think he'd mind playing in Montreal or Detroit.

I don't see Fedorov agreeing to a significant discount. He might play at a small discount (i.e. $0.5m less) but I still think he will require what he considers a "fair" deal. He will almost certainly demand a NTC.

Well I think you might be mistaken there. Feds made $6 million last year. If you think he will only agree to a 500K pay cut, I think you will find Feds without a team next year...at least in the NHL.

No team - not DC, Detroit or Montreal is going to pay Feds anywhere close to 5-6 million a season.

Personally I think I will resign in DC but it will be around 2.5-3.5 million for one year -maybe two. Now I'm not a CBA genius so i'm unaware if an incentive laden contract is a possibility. If it is - look for such a deal to be signed.

That's not what I meant. Fedorov hasn't been worth $5-6M in years.

I was thinking more along the lines of $3M/year, and a discount would be $0.5m/year off that.

Ok if we pause time for Backstrom but travel back in time for Feds and Nylander

Is Chris Clark really a first line RW for Washington? I guess his determination and grit works well with the insane talent (which also happens to be determined and gritty as well) on his left wing.

Awesome for the guy though, one of my favorite Flames for years.

He plays the Holmstrom role. Gets dirty goals, sits in front of the net on power plays, etc.

Ovie plays better with the puck possesion type guys on his RW. Players like Clark and Kozlov that are hard to knock off the puck and can eventually cycle it to him. Clark is a bit better at crashing the net and knocking in loose pucks then Kozlov so thats why most have him slotted on the 1st line, but Ovie's numbers have been much better when one of those 2 are on his wing.

Should Fedorov return, I'd expect the Caps to play Ovechkin with Backstrom, Semin with Fedorov, and perhaps Laich and Clark with Nylander. Fedorov works well with one of the two Russian wingers and probably would play with one of them. Either way, it would probably be a situation in which the team plays three scoring lines and one checking/energy line. Perhaps the Fedorov and Nylander lines would be 2a and 2b.

Having Nylander healthy will create a dynamic that didn't exist last year, should Fedorov return. It also enables the team to ride an aging Fedorov, and to spell him with Nylander (or Laich) down the middle when/if Fedorov tires, since they'd be carrying three legitimate scoring-line centers (Backstrom, Nylander, Fedorov).

I'm curious, why do people think Ovechkin would play with Backstrom? Yeah yeah that was the original plan, but didn't you guys watch the playoffs? Backstrom and Semin had instant chemistry why would you want to break that up?
