Even still, he doesn't get the 'max money' phoenix has offered him. I think he loses around half a million over 2 years because he's no longer subject to the old CBA. I don't care who you are, that's a ton of money so it's a risky move if he busts out of the NHL.

2004 was a strange year, if you had the 1st or 2nd overall, you were getting an elite-level player, the rest was just a mess.

I'm not talking about biggest bust, but they went way off the board to take Wheeler and they didn't even get him signed.

Wouldn't it better to sign a proven UFA and let time to Pacioretty to developp? Just saying because I think overpaying Wheeler wouldn't be too good of an idea.

Normally I scoff at the "hey, this guy is available... how would he fit into the Habs lineup" threads. He certainly represents something that we don't have in the group of guys on the NHL roster. Having said that, I am always wary of paying big bucks to a guy who has never seen a game in the NHL, 1st round pick or not.

Not if Wheeler ends up being the next Rick Nash or something, while Max Pac ends up being another Latendresse .

* sits back and waits for the replies to THAT one...*

I couldn't care less if he's a 1st rounder or not, I prefer going with could be become a good hockey player or not and I understand he was playing his 3rd year in the NCAA this year, but from the games I saw, he was purely dominating out there.

Sure a guy like Kevin Porter who was named the best player in the NCAA played great games and on a consistant basis, most games were just great games.

But Wheeler might have played the most dominant games I've seen from a NCAA player. Obviously, to finish with "only" 35 points in 44 games, he might have played some ordinary ones as well. Still Minnesota was obviously not known as an offensive force. Look at their forwards and you'll know what I mean.

I would definately want to get him. It's not like we have tons of those in the system. I believe he could be a late-bloomer.

Again it comes with expectations. If you don't expect a 5th pick overall, you won't be dissapointed.

Even if we sign Wheeler we'd still be able to sign a proven UFA. Wheeler will most likely start the season in the AHL and we have nothing to lose if we sign him, no draft picks, no prospects, nothing.

It would be a risk worth taking as Wheeler is 6'4'' 220 and we've been lacking players like him over the years, if he doesn't pan out who cares as we give up nothing to get him.

A 6'3 RHed RW who can skate very well is always appreciated, especially since we don't have any of those except maybe Wyman.. but he's smaller.

I definitely want Wheeler.

Well, if he beats out the other prospects great. If not, great. He can play in the AHL for a bit. Won't count against the cap down there.

And I have to say...
