I recall reading somewhere that Lowe would make one pick his own in each draft and leave the rest to the scouts

Several years ago I asked Guy to ask this precise question. Lowe's answer was unequivocal. The scouts run the table at the draft. In those days it was Prendergast. Lowe said the only exception is that he has a couple of times made a very late round pick (6th or 7th). Other than that he is there for trades and to smile at the camera.

It would be really interesting to know what late round picks he's had his hands in considering that in the last 5 years we've made late round picks that have either turned out, or look like a promising thing now.

Too soft. That is why Greene is not going anywhere unless we acquire a tough shut down D man. MacT is not going to replace the large and tough Greene with the small Chorney.

Yeah but for some reason professional scouting makes the diamond trade in Antwerp look like a casual hobby when it comes to secretiveness. What I want to know from the current crop of scouts is which one said no when New Jersey asked to move up in 2003 and got overruled by the rest? But in scouting you live by team consensus.

I recall Brodziak being one of "Lowe's" picks as well for some reason...I could be way off the mark though.

Maybe Guy could clarify?

No, Brodziak was Lorne Davis.

Spurgeon is a lot better than you give him credit for. He will be one of the surprises this year if he is over his concussion symptoms and can play like he did before along the boards and in the corners.

Lorne Davis was the guy who wanted Brodziak the year before they actually took him.

I think it was Guy that interviewed one of our scouts a couple years ago. Apparently he was pushing hard back in the day to draft Kaberle but got over ruled.

Am I remembering correctly here Guy?

By the way, a Chorney contract is "Not Final Yet" according to my well positioned source.

More than likely dotting I's and corssing T's but that's why nothing has been announced, cause it ain't done until a name is on the bottom line which hasn't happened as of 1:15 PM.

Was there really a big battle going on over this contract, or was that all blown out of porportion?

I'm only hearing one side of the argument so I can't really tell how heated the other side was but I can say that the team was pretty disappointed over the player's (and I should say agent and not the player so much) position in not coming to camp. There was furstration involved for sure.

I'm sure we'll talk to Chorney about negotiations tonight on the show. Hopefully it's a done deal by then.

If he was going to decide to go back to school I thought he didn't have a choice but to not go to camp?

Not sure if I understand what you are saying. Did you think that all the NCAA guys who are in camp right now are not going back to school?

NCAA guys can attend rookie camp, as long as they pay their own way, and maintain NCAA eligibility.

However, the moment they set foot in the team's main training camp, their NCAA eligibility is waived.

From Tencer's Blog on the Oiler Site:

Dan's Dish: The Oilers have agreed to terms with prospect defenseman Taylor Chorney on a 3 year entry level contract. "We've come to terms with Taylor," Kevin Lowe told me today. "We haven't been able to register the contract yet; it's a timing issue with the league. Both sides are comfortable that we've agreed to a deal, we just can't announce it at this point." The deal will become official on July 1st and Chorney will turn pro after 3 years at the University of North Dakota.
