Gary Roberts

Retire, Resign, or Free agent?

I think he will play one more season with the C in Pittsburgh, (therrian will finally figure out how stupid he was to give the C to Crosby so young and will give it to Roberts, the real Captain on the team)

Wouldn't mind having him draw in as Calgary's 13th / 14th forward to help guide the young pups along who will no doubt have to start contributing this season.

Then he can retire a Flame, where he belongs.

No it isn't. He's a great veteran presence in the locker room. The guy is a fitness freak and has inspired at least one Penguin (Orpik) to take up similar habits. Because of it, Brooks has gone from a bottom pairing guy last year, to a top pairing talent this year.

I'd love for him to re-sign. The cap wont be a problem until the 09-10 season, so keeping him through 08-09 wouldn't be a problem either. Since his cap hit doesn't really matter next year, I don't really care what they sign him for. Though I would place his value at around 1.5 million. 750k is earned playing on the 4th line (and occasional substitution on higher lines) and what he brings in leadership is worth another 750.

Edit: Plus he's a huge fan favorite, which has to be worth something too.

Kings could use a guy like Roberts, regardless of his age.

First off you do realize it wasn't all Therrien giving Crosby the C. It involved Ray Shero too and he presented the idea to him

He said in a CBC interview after the game 6 loss that he would like to return to Pittsburgh for one more season.

Calgary has "young pups" In all seriousness though I would have Gary on my team to play on the fourth line.

I would love to bring him out to Vancouver. He's such a good influence in the dressing room and a great mentor for the younger players. As I'm sure many of you know Luc Bourdon's best friend/partner in junior was Kris Letang. Luc and Kris had planned on both getting motorcycle's, but Roberts talked Letang out of it...too bad Bourdon didn't have such a good influence around.

I think Roberts will definitely be a Penguin next season.

WWGRD is just too good a marketing angle.

Yeah, that damn Crosby. Only captained his team to within 2 wins of a Stanley Cup.

What a piece of ****.

I'd love to see him re-sign for one more season. If he wants it, I don't see why we wouldn't do it. He's a great leader and role model. His on-ice production might not be where it used to be, but I hardly think that matters when you're Gary Roberts. He brings more to the table than points.

I like how you're using Bourdon's passing to take cheapshots at the players in the canucks dressing room.

Do you actually believe had Roberts been Bourdon's teammate bourdon wouldn't have bought the motorcycle? Bourdon couldn't be persuaded by his own mother and girlfriend. Roberts, or any other player who's supposedly a "good influence" wouldn't have made any difference whatsoever.

God i hope so, i can;t take not seeing Roberts. I'll miss him too much. What's Pittsburgh without scary gary? i hope not to find out, and when he retires he can stay for some position with the team. The whole team loves him to bits too. I can see Gary working out with some of the team in the off season again.

As an aside, I remember when we traded for him as a 'rental' and it was widely assumed as a 'given' and 'guarentee' that Montreal, Toronto, the Sens were his next destination. Pittsburgh becomes attractive to players once they get a chance to actually experience the team and city. I have seen it a hundred times before over the years. Hossa anyone? I heard Mario interviewed and he was talking about how attractive it would be to have Hossa on Crosby's wing for the next couple of years or more. I still have some nice hope based on past experiences, like with on a smaller scale Gary Roberts.

Well, yes... with Nystrom and Giordano and then Prust, Maki, Van der Gulik, Chucko, Pardy, Ramholt, Pelech, McElhinney and maybe Stevenson all vying for positions on the team next year...Roberts' leadership and experience in the game would fit right in. He'd be a great mentor for a handful of those names.
