Jordan Staal

I know that Shero has stated that he will be re-signed. I know that Hossa will not stay. I know that the probability of him being traded is slim.

Now, if the Penguins were to keep Hossa, a pairing likely that would have to leave would be people such as Malone and Staal...What do you think the Penguins could get for Staal, if that were to happen?

We'll give you Kesler + prospect for him. Lateral move, but Kesler comes much cheaper.

It's a bad move for both teams. Kesler fits your team like a glove, Staal ours.

It's hard to pinpoint Staal's value at this time, but I'm sure he's of immense importance to the Pens. He should be, anyway, as you're not going to find very many kids his age who are as gifted. I love his defensive abilities, and you just know he's eventually going to break through as a goal scorer. Last season's weak offensive output will prove to be anomalous as his career advances, I think.

This is all assuming they trade Staal to make room for Hossa though

I'm not sure what you mean. Kesler does the same thing Staal does; he's the defensive specialist that can chip in a few goals. I don't see how either fits the Canucks or Pens "better". Staal would be good here because we need a couple of goal scorers who are also defensively aware. The Penguins still get a defensive specialist, but at a cheaper price.

Personally, I'd love to have Staal back on Malkin's wing, but rumor has it, Staal is hell-bent on being a center, so whatev.

I'd be fine trading Staal if it means Hossa stays. Of course, that trade would come next offseason unless we were blown away this offseason.

I have no idea where to pinpoint his value. There will be people going way over and way under his value around here I'm sure.

Staal does fit our team well, and is a rarity because he is so good defensively at only 19, and has the potential to be a 30 goal scorer

I'll bet you all my Star Wars action figures that if Staal goes on the open market he gets at least twice that.

I expect a 3m deal for around 5-7 years. He's well worth that too. He's a 2nd line center, with Selke potential and 30g upside. It's hard to find these kind of guys. Also it helps that you don't need an offensive stalwart when you have Crosby at the helm.

I'll kiss Shero if he gets Staal signed a deal for that term and per annum.

Don't see it happening though. 4+ mil a year is more likely if he signs a contract that length.

Hossa leaving is not set in stone either, if he and Shero can work out a deal where its basically the same type of money he made in Atlanta which will average out to 6.whatever million a year, it could work.

As for Staal...let's be real. He's the type of guy that is going to receive a contract that is back loaded, to anticipate progression in his development, much like Whitney's deal but not so much as much in the dollar figure wise.

Our Pterodactyl is going nowhere.

if Beauchemin was locked up for 4 years at the price he is at + Bobby Ryan and perhaps another player, then i'd have to listen and accept as well. Ryan was a guy i wanted the Pens to draft but he was going to go high in the draft so it was a sol type of moment.

He'd be great on the pens, he'd have Sid or Geno as his centre.

Vermette, even though he got more points, has a higher faceoff %, can also play left wing and is better on the PK he will still cost less.

That would be a sweet deal, but I suspect Ryan will outproduce Staal in the long run.

Staal had a bad year so his offensive upside is pegged to be lower than it originally was. I can see him at least hitting the "Mikko Koivu" level.
