I'm more and more warming up to taking Jared Staal at 20. Call me what you want, but everything I saw of this kid this year makes me think he'll be a very solid NHLer. Of course, I'd rather trade down to the lower 1st or even the 2nd, but I do think that he'd be a decent pick at 20 if the Rangers actually did it.
That said, I'd still rather pick up a guy like Tedenby at 20.
Staal I never understood, and especially the Rangers were able to TRADE UP to get him. That means on top of the teams that passed, there was at least one other team that liked someone else enough to trade away their shot at him.
The real humor is that the same team then turned around and dealt that player (Alex Bourret) to the rangers two years later for pascal dupuis.

Does anyone know anything about David Carle? On the TSN top prospects he's at 60 and his description makes him seem like a good 2nd or 3rd round pick. I'd be interested in learning some more about him.
Quote:
From NHL Central Scouting: David's first two strides get him to top speed and he passes the puck and skates like a pro. He has a very heavy shot from the point and he plays the body hard. He has a strong overall game and physical presence -- he displays all the same signs that his brother, Matt, had at the same age.
Petrov wants to come to the US and play in the NHL. He does have 3yrs remaining on his contract though. That would make him 21 when he would come here probably. Do we take a chance? It seems that he would be just as old as other prospects and just as many years it would take to get him here as players in the CHL. Plus he would already have played against men for 4 yrs, not juniors.
I still say take him. If not him than I would like Karlsson.

id love to snag beach. we dont have a big forward with skill and grit other than dubinsky. anisimov is big but i dont know much about his physical type of game. for all we know anisimov can be the next oleg kvasha (bust), or viktor kozlov (solid player but had better potential) for that matter.
To me, everyone over 5 or 6 is gonna be in the same boat up until about 40 - any pick can work out or not, so its really up to what the Rangers need and want in a player. Some risks with players sizes and personalities in that group, but i still think its going to turn out as a pretty deep draft.
I like the idea of a big bruiser on the backend myself.

A lot of nice upside there. If he's available at #20, it'd be hard to pass up.
Also, on The Point on NHL Home Ice just now, the Columbus Dispatch beat reporter for the Jackets said the #6 pick is very much in play for a #1 center (and trying to get the rights for Malone).
So, would the #6 be as cheap as Dubi? If so, would you do it? What about Dubi + Dawes?

nope it would cost more than first year nhl player and i would not trade dubinsky. we dont have much power forward types and he is the closest one that we have. i think staal from the pens, cole from the canes along those lines.

Dubi isn't a #1 center, and no way is he worth the # 6 pick from their prospective. Funny thing is is that I don't think he is worth the #6 pick from our perspective if we re-sign Jagr. However Gomez or Drury could play it. Wouldn't mind shedding one of those ludicrus *Drury* contracts.

This is possibly the most realistic post you've ever made
If the Rangers didn't have Marc Staal, would all of you advocating for Jared still be doing it?
I mean...he sounds like he'll most likely pan out to be a good 3rd liner. Wooo, just what the Rangers need more of.
I'd rather take a shot at someone with higher upside and hope that Staal lasts until the Rangers second pick, if they really must take him
exactly how I feel. I still hope to end up w/ a draft like this.
1st - Karlsson While small he is an offensive force. he is only 18 so he can still grow.
2nd- Petrov I think he might still be around here, and if he is there is no excuse to not nab him.
3rd- jerome Flaake - ripped up the German junior leagues. didn't really play that much in the senior leagues. has a ton of offensive potential. My pick for a draft steal.
It really depends on how desperate the Jackets are. They need someone with size and toughness to team with Nash, and Dubi has some expereince with a play maker now.
For the record, I'm not sure I make the move. I doubt Drury waives is NMC to go to the Jackets, but this might be the Rangers' most realistic shot at getting a top 10 pick to grab a stud defender or Filatov.
I think they'll probably go with a forward where they're picking.
The defenseman in the draft, at least in my opinion, break down into the following tiers:
Doughty
Bogosian
Pietrangelo
Schenn
Del Zotto
Myers
Teubert
Robak
Carlson
Sbisa
Suave
Cuma
Ness
Niemi
Goloubef
Stone
To me there is a drop from the first to second tier and then a bigger drop from second to third tier and then a bigger drop to fourth and fifth.
When you look at the defenseman in the draft, I espect at least one from tier three to drop and maybe even Del Zotto from tier two. But I just think there are going to be better forwards than defenseman around that slot. The Carlson crowd seems to be more in the 25-35 pick range.
Ironically the player who would most fit the Rangers needs would be a kid like Schenn, but I don't see them trading up to get him.
Edge, what do you think of Niemi? Could he be around @ #51 or even #74?
