Hurricanes Sign Leighton To Two-year Deal

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=240339&l...=headlines_nhl

The Carolina Hurricanes signed the veteran goaltender to a US$1.2-million, two-year contract on Wednesday. Leighton received a one-way deal and will start next season as Cam Ward's backup.

It is 600K per year, so it saves 800K per season over what they were paying Grahame, and as you say, Leighton can't be much worse. He also certainly earned the opportunity with his play in Albany.

I'm a little wary of Leighton's ability to be a full-time back-up at the NHL level, but at the price it's hard to complain about the risk. Alot like the Eaves' deal, low-risk high-reward possibility.

He played decently in 2 games with the Canes, and he certianly earned it with his play in Albany.

In my opinion, Leighton should have probably been a backup in this league already. He didn't do a bad job in his time in Chicago considering the situation he was in and looked better than Grahame in training camp last season anyway. Blackhawks fans want to chime in?

He deserves the shot.He was a studd for Albany last year and carried a average team that was decimated with call ups.

Leighton was solid at times with Hawks and extremely erractic at others. He does have all the tools to be a successful backup. I think he will finally establish himself in Carolina.

Now if Ward goes down with an injury that will keep him out of lineup then you would need to get another goalie. Leighton is not an NHL starter. 20-25 games is best he will offer.

He did have that one amazingly 98 save game that went into a 5th overtime.....but lost.

In addition to being the best goaltender in the league during the regular season and breaking all Albany's franchise records for goaltending...so ya, he did have that one game but that's about it.

They did laugh about it. Leighton was here for training camp and came up for a short stint in January. Of coursse they were asked about it and Cam said they both looked at each other and laughed.

Yeah, basically Grahame's gonna ask for more money for doing a worse job than Leighton did for less, so the Canes at least have an option if they can't sign a free agent.

The canes aren't trying to sign a free agent goalie so I'm not sure why you're talking about Leighton like he's the emergency plan if things go wrong. He's the back-up next year for sure, Jim Rutherford said as much.

^It cracks me up that you can see Tom Rowe in that picture. Its all full circle now, Ward, Leighton and Rowe all up with the big club on the same team, 4 years removed from that brawl. And what is even funnier, Rowe started it all
