Steve Eminger

I'm just curious to see what others around the league think Eminger's worth. The Capitals are likely to trade someone this offseason (maybe before the draft) just to free up roster space, and I think Eminger might be the best candidate.

After the year he's had he would almost certainly accept his qualifying offer ($1mil) and I expect GMGM to qualify him if he doesn't trade him prior to the 25th. His upside may still be there, nobody around Caps nation really knows why he didn't get much playing time this season. If he had issues they weren't highly visible, and he played excellent in the playoffs.

Whatever trade the Caps do make (whether it's Eminger, or maybe Jurcina, or someone else on the bubble) I doubt they'd be looking for a roster player to come back. So just a pick or prospect, I imagine, would be the return. Any ideas?

The Capitals didn't trade Eminger last season because they were not offered a roster defenseman in return. While Alzner may have arrived, Pothier may be lost. I am not convinced that McPhee has any intention of trading from his NHL experienced defense crew for non-NHL assets.

I'm thinking a 2nd rounder or a net salary decrease of about $1.5-$2.0 million to the team acquiring Eminger.

If he's a bottom-pairing D-man... 3rd round pick , but since he's young as high as a 2nd.

The negative is that he appeared to be scratched for a large number of games in 07-08. If this happens again, his value plummets to less than a 4th (i.e he is press box filler).

We'll probably have to trade someone, but I can see them waiting until training camp when things are clearer.

The way I see it, we keep 7 defenseman next season, not 8, because Lepisto and Alzner can both go to Hershey at a moment's notice and that gives us more flexibility.

Poti, Green, Morrisonn, and Schultz are pretty much locks to be in the top 6 (assuming Mo and Green are signed, naturally). That leaves Erskine, Jurcina, Eminger, Alzner, and Lepisto fighting for the last two spots, and then of course Pothier if he's healthy again. I think Erskine is a pretty good candidate to be waived, I doubt anyone would give us anything for him but who knows. Eminger or Jurcina are the ones I see being traded, and I just think Eminger would bring us more in return. That, and Jurcina fills a more important role for us if he bounces back. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Eminger is kept, but someone's got to be moved and I was just curious to see what Eminger might fetch.
