Olli Jokinen likely heading to Columbus

Watching The Spin on The Score right now and Strachan said Jokinen will defiantly not be in Florida next season and that he will most likely be traded to Columbus.

Makes sense and good for Columbus if true.

I would guess that. Maybe we send Stumpel/Peltonen/Dvorak?

What is Zherdev's contract status?

I think it's too much...if I was Columbus, I wouldn't do it. Zherdev just had a good season, and the 6th overall pick will bring a pretty good star player.

I would doubt that Florida would want a pick in that situation. Plus, Zherdev was a player that passed on to take Nathan Horton.

Florida wants defense. I could see them wanting a player like Klesla and perhaps Gilbert Brule to help even it out. Florida is a team that thinks they can win in the immediate future. If they trade Jokinen for a high pick it seems like they may be going for the two or three year rebuild.

1 year remaining at $3.25mil, $2.5mil cap hit. RFA after this upcoming year.

Strachan said that one of the players going the Panthers way would be Picard.

For all it seems to be worth on these boards these days, Jackets Beat Writer Aaron Portzline says Jokinen will not be coming to Columbus.

I wonder if Bouw's contract negotiations affect this trade. Maybe Florida is going to do a mini rebuild...

I think its perfect. FLA will want a young player with potential that can hopefully replace Olli right off the bad or in the near future...and the 1st round pick for their top player, and for one of the better centers in the league, at still a pretty young age.

Asking price of Olli is going to be high, as it should...I won't be surprised if that is the trade.

Obviously more risky for the Jackets, but maybe a risk they are willing to take to get a #1 center for the next half dozen years to play with Nash...who knows.

I wonder if this is like Spezza getting traded for Luongo.

For what it's worth:

Quote:
Florida doesn't have a first-round pick in next week's NHL Draft -- the Panthers sent it to Nashville as part of the Tomas Vokoun deal last summer -- so the team hopes to trade its way into the draft's opening night, June 20.

''We would want to get a first-round pick back [in any trade],'' Martin said last week.

Strachan is usually full of crap, but it's pretty clear that Columbus is in the market for a first line center. I think Jokinen would be perfect on Columbus. He and Nash would be a killer combo.

Strachan's always full of it.

At least Eklund gets a few things right.

I hope Jokinen decides to go play back home and I never have to hear a Jokinen to ______ thread again.

But thats just me

Hes one of my most hated players in the NHL and it has nothing to do with his game

maybe Zherdev & the 16th but not the 6th... if Picard is involved I'm not sure what his value would be

I think Strachan said Picard & 1st for Jokinen.

Good deal for Columbus. Not so sure about Florida. Seems like a serious step back for them.

Am I the only guy that thinks that Nash would be better with a playmaking center moreso than Jokinen?

I don't think that Zherdev + 6th overall would work from CBJ point of view. They'd only have 2 bonified scoring line players on the team. Granted that OJ would be an upgrade on Zherdev, but they need to ADD to Nash/Zherdev, not upgrade Zherdev.

And I really don't know what sort of value Picard has right now? He was drafted 4-5 years ago and seemed to be considered a bust. I just don't see how he could carry much value in an OJ type trade.

And if the Panthers trade OJ- what's the odds they're able to lock J-Bo up long term? I would have to think that any trade where the Panther on-ice product takes a step back would really hurt the chance of resigning J-Bo.

yes and no... this could be part of bigger trades for the Panthers... should they make such a deal parts acquired could be used in part to land another player(s)

if this trade does happen at least Jokinen will keep up his run of not making the playoffs

with Jokinen playing with Nash I think the Blue Jackets could make the playoffs for the 1st time in franchise history

Feb 2008

Al Strachan stands by his statement last week that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier will ask for a trade in the off-season. Strachan indicated that his source is very reliable and close to Lecavalier, and would have no reason to make up rumors.

Jokinen is a goal-scoring center. Nash is a goal-scoring winger. This, like the Marleau to Columbus reports, makes little sense from the perspective of the Jackets trying to find an elite set-up man for their franchise player. Brad Richards was probably their best shot at doing that and they blew it and with precious little in the way of elite playmaking pivots on the trading block, I really don't know where C-bus goes from here. Certainly not settling for a scoring power center to play with a near carbon copy on his wing.
