Interest in Bobby Holik

If we don't resign Mr Smolinski would there be any interest in this big veteran Center?

He'd be option D or E, but sure. I wouldn't be opposed.

He's the guy i was hoping the Habs would grab for the playoffs. But seeing as how Smoke essentially actually became decent during those, we didnt end up needing him.

But i still wouldnt be opposed to bringing him in for one year while Chipper carves himself on the 4th line.

Nope, forget about Holik, go get a true n.1 center, put koivu and Plekanec as the 2nd and 3rd centers and put Chipper on the 4th

Exactly what I was going to say. Probably my option C. Maybe D.

Because there are so many of those available. So what happens if Sundin signs elsewhere?

Holik would be a great two-way presence and can take faceoffs. He's also a good leader, playoff performer and generally catches too much crap for signing a big money contract in NY.

I think the Habs are past overpaying for marginalized players. Didn't Gainey stress the need to continue building the team on a speed/skating concept? Holik alone defeats that purpose.

I could see us bringing him in to play on the 4th line with Kostopoulos and Begin. Wouldn't mind it at all, he's a tough, smart hockey player, and can be put out there late in games when we are trying to protect and is great in the circle as well.

How much are we talking about for this 3rd/4th liner?

And previous 3rd line centers like Bonk and Smolinski. They were burners.

Holik is a good insurance policy, is all I'm saying. He's a 3rd line center that's got experience in higher roles (in case of injury). It's not like we have a top 6 center waiting in the wings to call up if Plekanec went down for an extended period. He'd be a great mentor for Chipchura, and he helps in the grit department as well.

Who's talking about overpaying, anyway? He would make like $3M. We need a center, and there aren't many available. I'm not too thrilled about going into the season with Plekanec-Koivu-Chipchura-Lapierre.

And people are complaining about Streit at 3-4M...

So a fourth line player at 4-5M?
May be a third line (do you really think he could bump Koivu and Plek?).

Please close this thread...

BTW Lats did 16 goals...
There is no way hes getting 4.5million again....

He'll hbave to take a paycut if he wants to stay in the NHL.

After reading the title "Interest in Bobby Holik" I couldn't help but wonder: where? Definitely not here.

Sounds rough... Hey Bobby, this is your last chance to win the cup...
He won the cup with the Devils in '95 and '00.

I would not even give him 2.5M, to old and not the player he once was. I think there are much better option available.

The bargains on the UFA market don't often seem to be the ones coming down from a higher salary to a lower one. I wouldn't mind having Holik, but at a cost that's pretty dramatically lower than what he has been used to getting. Like, say, $1.5Mish. Clearly he's not going to take that. And that's fine by me.
