Backup Goalie thread... Halak RFA- Re-sign, Trade, Offer sheet, vet replacement??

Dont know if this has been discussed (but if so, please get rid of this thread).

But according to this site, Halak has received offers from some Russian clubs.

May consider leaving.

Take it for what its worth.

I think if he's given the backup job in Montreal he stays.... If we sign an experienced back up for Price then Halak is gone, either via trade or to Europe.

Also i think there is some rule in Russia where they can't have foreign goalies anymore.... I think Thief50 knows more about this....

Well Halak has repeatedly said he wanted to be a No.1 goalie in the NHL, be that with the Habs or another team. And knowing he might be dealt soon and he would have his starting goalie spot...well i just dont see him going to Russia.

The Russian Hockey Federation's idea of banning foreign goalies is history. They won't ban foreign goalies when they are starting an Europeen league to compete with the NHL. They already have non-russian teams from Belarus, Kazakhstan & Latvia and asked to 2 Swedish teams to join the league for 2009-10.

Halak will get like 30 starts or so...I don't see why he would leave considering his age. Not many goaltenders can be starters in the NHL at that age. I'm not worried...he'll stay,

Gainey seems to like competition more than mentors. I think Halak stays.

At the end of the season, Halak said he wants to stay, that he's still young, and that there would be plenty of time for playing in Europe when he was older if that's what he wanted to do. So while the offers could be more than competitive financially, I assume/hope he'll stick to his word and keep the NHL potential alive.

Why do people want to trade Halak and sign a "veteran backup"? I'd rather have Halak over any UFA goalie out there (even Huet) as he has the ability to step in and be a #1 goalie for 30+ games (in case of injury or poor play by Price) as he showed he can start in the league as he almost led us to the playoffs 2 years ago. Not to mention that he can also push Price and compete with him to take over the #1 job.

Now onto the argument some people use saying a mentor/teacher like Kolzig would help Price... the truth is Price has a mentor and a guy to teach him and his name is Roland Melanson. Rollie will be there to help Price with the ups and downs as he has already throughout Price's young career, a veteran goalie coach >>> a veteran backup goalie.

Halak will most likely play 30 games with us and will help Price stay fresh for the playoffs and in those 30 games Halak will give our team a chance to win, something an old plug veteran goalie like Kolzig would not be able to do for us.

Isn't Robert Esche the starter for Ak Bars Kazan?

But there are things a veteran goalie can teach Price that Rollie can't. The goalie coach only teaches the technical aspects of the game. A guy like Kolzig could teach Price the mental aspects of the game. For instance, how to shake off a poor playoff performance. Maybe if he had a veteran like Kolzig to confide in, he would have turned it around sooner. I'll take the guy with the most NHL experience as my mentor.

Though we need to remember this is not a competition either. Melanson and Kolzig both have different things to teach Price and I think he would benefit more with a veteran like Olaf on the team.

Vezina winner/Stanley Cup Finals >>> Goalie coach IMHO
Melanson played in the league for over 10 years, i'm pretty sure he could teach him the mental aspects of the game. Also i'll take the goalie coach over Kolzig who pretty much walked out on his team after Huet was brought in.

Kinda, Esche (18), Mika Noronen (15) and Vasiliy Koshechkin (19) pretty much splitted the season but Esche had the better stats (1.75, 0.926 vs 2.38+, 0.901 or less). Also, Esche signed with SKA St. Petersburg for next season.

The Offseason Back-Up Goalie thread.... Keep Halak?? Sign a Vet??

Wondering if MTL should go and get a top notch goalie coach for Price.

And I feel halak is gone, and Kolzig comes in.

But the coach thing , i wonder..... Price is good, but is Rollie the right man to teach?

If you look at the amount of goalies who came to Montreal and managed to crank up their game, you'll understand why Melanson is pretty much a lock in Montreal.
