Malone heading to FA

I don't know where else to post this, but:

Quote:
Ryan Malone has told The Dispatch tonight that he plans to test the free agent market on July 1, that he's not going to negotiate with any club -- Blue Jackets, Wild, anybody -- before free agency.
Here's his explanation: "I don't want any team I go to to give up a possible teammate. So we will wait till the first."
This is from the excellent Blue Jackets/NHL blog Puck-Rakers. In many ways it puts our faithful group of Zipay, Dellapina, and Sam to shame.

I wouldn't mind having him, but I bet he's looking to cash in and won't be worth the contract he ends up signing

Not sure if Malone is the answer. Lets not forget the guys numbers come from playing with Crosby and Malkin.

I like the guy, but the price will be too high.

The Rangers need a guy who can compliment Gomez for that type of $$$, and this isn't the player IMO.

If he came cheap I'd love to have him with Dubinsky, but let's not kid ourselves... hes a FA.

If we don't sign Avery, Slats will go after Malone very hard.

Perhaps but Malone probably goes off the market on 7/1. That means there will have to be a decision made on Avery prior to then.

Wants alot of money and we dont know if he is a product of playing with Malkin. Sounds like a gamble, and at his price I say no thanks.

I would think so. If Slats and Avery's agent have been talking, and they can't find an agreeable number, I have no doubt that Slats discontinues his chat with Avery and puts $4.5 - $5MM in front of Malone.

I would love Malone.........I would also like Demitra

Really have no clue what is going to happen but it should all come together real soon with the draft coming............deals are a brewing this week

I think Gomez would be fine with Avery on the left and then a FA like Malone, Ryder on the Right

Jagr needs to come back for one more and centres by Dubinsky but then they need another LW for that line................Demitra would be great but the cap may not let that happen

Dawes ,Callahan , Drury would be a great 3 rd line

Guess I am saying they need 2 forwards not to mention 2 D men..........going the FA route would be expensive since their is not a good crop so a deal may go down instead

Yes, Malone has put up a lot of points playing with Malkin, but I think what he really brings to the table is that warrior mind-set we need. Is that alone worth $4.5MM+? I don't know, but if he can put up similar numbers playing on Gomer's wing, then yes.

During the playoffs Malone really showed me how much of a warrior he really was. He broke his nose in one game, then in Game 5 of the SCF he got hit by Hal Gill's shot in the face and didn't miss any time. He seemed like a real leader on that pens team and deserved to be captain over Cindy Crybaby. He defends his teamates and would really be needed if Avery left.

5 million for a player who tops out at 50 points while playing with the most explosive offense in the NHL? Good grief. That has disaster written all over it.

Let's not sign someone to undeserving money based on reputation a second season in a row. Yes, he's got heart, but even at 4.5 he's overpaid on inflates numbers. Let' put that $$$ to someone that brings more than just heart to the table for once (everyone has heart, cally, dubi, betts, aves etc...). If he takes 2.5, I can live with it. Anymore, no thanks. Remeber, he'll be leaving an offensively potent team and joining an offensively neutered team.

I'm not advocating signing Malone but I think this whole "numbers are inflated" idea is being blown out of proportion. It's not as if he's coming here and going to play with Mike Sillinger or Steve Rucchin. If indeed Gomez is an elite playmaker and you feel that Malone is the guy who can play with him and finish scoring opportunities, how much are his numbers really going to diminish?

With the exception of 2003-04 when he put up similar numbers before they were in the league.

My gut tells me he's a Ranger on July 1st. He screams a Slats player, and he's one of the most coveted UFAs out there. We overpay for him, but he's a Ranger. Again, just my gut.

Fine, let's assume he can get 50 points next to Gomez. Is that production worth anywhere near 5 million?

according to Sather probably. I mean is Drury's production worth $7mi. Was Shanny's production worth $5mil. I think neither in all three cases. unfortunately I don't work for the Rangers.

On our team? In 2003? No. In 2008? Someone will pay for it, and it will probably be us.

If you focus on the goals, he would replace Shanny's production and his salary. It'd be a wash, with lots of youth in the tank.

Call me crazy, very crazy, but Hugh Jessiman reminds me a lt of Ryan Malone. Both are big power fowards who like to set up around the net. Also both have taken time time to develop. Just something to think about.

That has nothing to do with what I posted.
