The hot streak...

...does not excuse Regier from not making a deal.

Our defense, as presently constituted, looks like this:

Kalinin / Zhitnik
Janik / Tallinder
Campbell / Delmore

Even when McKee, Patrick and Fitzpatrick were healthy, we still needed a more physical defense and a RD.

That situation is desperate now.

It is amazing to me that Ruff has a defense like that and is winning.

Jason Smith is available. Biron is tradeable in my opinion. We can only play one goaltender at a time, and Noronen and Biron have roughly played the same this year. Noronen hasn't played enough games to gage where he will end up as a goalie. Biron has.

Smith for Biron is pretty close. Some other parts would have to be added in likelihood.

I would like to try something like this:

Biron $2.2M
Campbell or Delmore $.55M or $1M
Boulton or Peters $.55M or $.35M
2005 3rd rounder

for

Smith $2.3M
Laraque $1.275M
If Salo's contract ends this year, he could be added here as a backup to Noronen.
Moreau could be added $1.5M

Instantly, it gives us the following defense:

Kalinin / Zhitnik
Tallinder / Smith
Janik / Delmore (figure Oilers would choose Campbell)

I feel much better about our top 4. Janik and Delmore can be used in spot duty.

When everyone gets healthy...
Kalinin / Zhitnik
McKee / Smith
Tallinder / Fitzpatrick or Patrick
Delmore

I actually feel pretty comfortable about that defense. It would be nice to deal Delmore at the deadline, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

Apparently we were contemplating the defense and a trades at the same time. I just put up a similiar, albeit shorter, post. Perhaps we should merge threads. Though I don't know exactly how to do that.

There is no way that we trade Biron right now. His record shows that he is winning more than the other goalies right now. Perhaps he has been helped more by the team's play than Noronen or Miller but either way we should keep him for the remainder of the year.
