Carle "Intercostal" Tear - 90% chance he will play Saturday (Dec. 13)

News does not look good for Carle. He was suffering from back pain, but reports are it is a intercostal muscle tear.

Quote:
It's a muscle that goes between the ribs and can wrap from the front to the back.

Apparently, the pain Carle is experiencing is in the middle to lower back and it's just not getting better. In fact, Carle said he still doesn't feel any better after missing four games.
It might be so bad, he could make it to the LTIR. While this stinks, it might open up some of that cap space we need (to put a more positive spin on it).

*coughs*...Sundin.

I know he's not a defenseman, but this would really open up room and make the offfensive so potent, we can afford to lack a little on the back end.

Get it done!

Might open up room for Jones when he comes back only if Carle goes on the LTIR.

Ugh, didn't want to hear this. I think Carle was a huge boost to the D.

Not really. When Briere comes back we wouldn't have room for all of these guys, and we still wouldn't have good enough defensemen. We don't need to open things up more.

Agreed. While I dont dislike Jones as much as I used to, he certainly is a significant downgrade from Carle in my opinion.

At the risk of being flamed...I don't think a lot people realize how good Sundin is. By the time he returns, his salary simply shouldn't be that much.

I don't pretend to know how the cap works, and quite possibly it wouldn't work. If Briere and Carle go on LTIR, and we can move Lupul, doesn't that create enough of an opening? I know Jones is coming back, so we have to add his salary to the cap.

If somebody more in the know could tell me how much money is saved with Briere and Carle out...Lupul gone...and Jones back on the books. What kind of room is left?

...anybody?

A good indicator of how good he is: if the Flyers were to sign him, Jeff Carter would be the third line center.

I agree. And I'm fine with that.

Sundin produced well playing for the Leafs who never really had anybody worthy (other than Mogilny and half a back) for his duration of his time there.

Surround our talent with Mats, and I think (other than being off for a couple months) he rips the NHL a new one.

He's strong along the boards, physical, great passer and finisher. I'd love to see him wearing the orange and black...if at all possible.

I had this a long time ago from surfing. It took forever to heal.

God this means Jones isnt going anywhere. Hell, Id rather bring up Parent and still trade his ass. Carle is solid, hope this thing gets better fast.

The problem is that we don't really save money when players are on the LTIR. It's just that the Flyers can go over the cap equivalent to the salaries on LTIR. But they can't bank the $ saved on the salaries of the players on LTIR. So as soon as Briere (and likely Carle) come off of LTIR, we would be back in cap hell.

At least that is my interpretation of it.

If you move Lupul, there is still too many centers. Briere at RW didn't work. The Carter to RW ship has obviously sailed by now. Richards is not an RW. No less than two of those guys would have to move to wing to get them the proper playing time.

The Flyers also just can't sign Sundin because of injuries. All these guys are going to come back at some point.

INCREDIBLE passer.

Jeez, what would the power play look like???

I think he fills a big hole in late game faceoffs, as well. 45 seconds left, Game 4 versus Pens, they have Crosby Malkin Satan Gonchar Staal and Fedotenko out there, face off to the left of Biron, might wanna win it...

Just to add a little fuel to the Sundin fire....

Last night Bob Clarke was on the TSN panel. After the Ottawa/Chicago game finished, James Duthie asked the panel a series of questions. One of the questions was, 'Which team would be the best fit for Mats Sundin?' The options were (a) Chicago, (b) The Rangers, (c) Montreal, (d) Vancouver.

Torts and Bob McKenzie said Vancouver, simply due to cap considerations. Bob Clarke said Montreal, but slipped in that Philadelphia would be a great fit as well because both teams have a deep and talented forward group where Mats could slide in on any line. He didn't have to bring up the Flyers, so maybe Philly's not out of the Sundin race yet.

I'd love to see Mats in orange and black; I just don't see how it could work financially without moving a huge salary and thereby (possibly) ruining the team's chemistry. Maybe he'll play for peanuts..... or cakes.

Well Bob Clarke does have a little bit of history with the Flyers so maybe he's just displaying a little homerism.

This sucks a lot. I really thought Carle solidified the 2nd pairing, and that he was a pleasant surprise. I still feel he is the puck mover we had been looking for, and hopefully will continue to improve and be with this team for a long time. This can be a pretty big blow, depending on how well Jones plays when he gets back.

Sundin would ease the pain though..
