These numbers are really nuts.

$5M per year, 2 year deal. He ISN'T all about the money, he wants to win a cup, and most cup contenders don't have that much cap room available. He is worth more, but will likely get between $5M and $6M per year from a team like MTL, OTT, DET, ANA, ETC...

The Habs can afford to pay him pretty much anything for 1 year. Past that I don't know that you'd want to go over $7-8M.

Although if we give up a 1st rounder to sign him, I say shave his salary!

I would give him 2-3 years at 6 million per if I were any team, regardless of cap space.

No, you'll be surprised if you are expecting him to fetch $10M. Given his age, and history (last few years) he is very likely to sign a 1 year deal, and as such, he could go as high as $6M. If he goes for a 2 year deal, which I think is less likely, but still possible, I figure it could go down to $5.5 or even $5M.

It won't be higher, unless he was to play again in Toronto, where he is fighting an uphill battle to even make the playoffs. Like many Vets, he is now looking for a cup, and is willing to take a discount to do so (if you consider $5-6M a discount).

Most cup contenders, including MTL, won't want to pay him more than $6M. Some CAN'T.

He wants $8 million minimum according to Howard Berger. And no he doesn't want to win a Stanley Cup.

I'm actually sure MTL would... Gainey has lost so many UFA these past years, he won't be losing Sundin IF he wants to go there of course. I think it's "if you wanna come, you get anything u want..." MTL time is NOW.

I have trouble believing either of those claims.

And yet the Leafs offer approximately $7M a year... The leafs would have to overpay to get him to re-sign, especially with everything he went through this year.

Also, I too find it hard to believe he does not want to win a cup, seeing as he said he did last year, and he then said he would like it to be in Toronto (which obviously won't happen in his remaining career).

So your saying he wants to retire without ever winning a Cup?

Okay Mats, whatever tickles your pickle.

Well if you take what he says literally, (eg. he only wants to win the cup with the Leafs) nope.

If MTL ends up signing him, is there some sort of compensation that goes back to the Leafs?
