I'm surprised there aren't at least a few people raising an eyebrow to lifetime contracts in the NHL

Welp, I thought that if Vinny was ever going to play in Montreal it would have to be on his next UFA contract, and I didn't think it would happen. Looks like I was right, even though I didn't expect a lifetime deal.

Bit disappointed because of all the people who tried to make us believe he had interest, but I suppose rationally nobody really believed he had any wish to do so. I could make a comment about preferring the worst team in the NHL to Montreal, but he does have a home/commitments/friends over there so that would be unfair.

This does reinforce the point that we should cherish local talent that actually DOES want to play in Montreal, because that wish -- and that specific kind of courage -- is rare among hockey players, even the local ones.

It really makes me wish the Habs had signed Dumont.

It's Tampa Bay. They haven't become a cautionary tale for nothing.

Good for Vinny, and well done for Tampa, that guy poors so much into the community good for hockey in Florida if it can survive.

Why a guy that wears #4 in honor of Jean Beliveau, born in Montreal, wouldnt want to represent is own culture, put his name in Montreal's history, that I dont get, regardless he's a great player, any 30 team in the league would offer 10million a season for him.

Anyone who thinks this stops anything is kidding themselves.

Now, every year that Tampa ends out around the bottom, the talk will be, "Tampa is going to sign ______, how will Tampa afford Vinny when these guys are RFA? I bet he wants another Cup, he probably wants out. Will he waive for Montreal?"

Lifestyle choices I guess. If I was a hockey player i'd do anything to play in Montreal, but that is kind of rare these days, sadly.

Send him a check right now and tell him to wrtie the numbers on it, and the lenght that he wants. If it doesn't work let's all send him letters with the or please on it with a big smile sign like this one

Maybe he'll accept. Last option is the kidnapping, it will only come if he really signs there.

What a loser. Have fun in Tampa Bay and when your career is over no one will remember you and you'll have virtually no impact on anything.

Great legacy... Tampa freakin Bay..

This year's award for the most dramatic actor goes to *opens the envelope* THEGOALJUDGE

For one he it hasn't been confirmed that Vinny has signed the contract with Tampa. The only fact right now is that they are close, but still in discussions.

Second, plenty of french canadian players have played outside of Montreal and enjoyed successful careers. Vinny's already won a cup and a Maurice Richard trophy, all this while playing with Tampa freakin Bay. So I think it's safe to say that he already has a decent legacy at the moment.

If I'm not mistaken, he's married/engaged to a Tampa native and is heavily involved with community there. You can't blame the dude for staying where he's made a home and a life.

I had some Lecavalier dreams like everyone else but I'm not going to hate on the guy because he didn't pack his bags and come to Montreal.

Amen. I am experiencing relief of Preparation H or Peptobismal preportions having heard that. I, too, thought I was in danger of becoming terminally ill from all the Vinny crud that my eyes ingest on a daily basis.

I wonder who will be the next almost unanimous savior we dream to see sign with the Habs when he becomes ufa !

Ive heard Crosby and Ovechkin a few times already.
Malkin is more plausible.

The saga is not over. It's not a signing as far as I know, just a report of good progress. So I am guessing we have Andrei Kostitsyn signed too then?

The media and the expectations are what keeps some away from Montreal...he is not as passionate about the Habs as Habs fans are...too bad...

That rds report means nothing to me.

ST. PETERSBURG TIMES: Damian Cristodero reports Vincent Lecavalier’s agent said he wouldn’t necessarily call a new deal for his client with the Tampa Bay Lightning as “close” but said the two sides aren’t so far apart that a deal could be reached.
