I still think the supply of D-men this summer is very small so players can pick and choose. Phoenix can't be high on Stuart's list.
Even if Phoenix spends $4-$5 mill on a d-man they are no where close to the cap roof.

They actually added virtually no salary with the Jokinen trade.

And only $20 million in cap space to do something about it. Poor Wayne.

That is good besides the fact this years UFA pool is pretty thin which should drive up the price and length on any of the good guys.

I really like the Jokinen move for them though. They could probably swing another deal rather than rely on the UFA crop.

Cap Space? When was the last time having ample cap room changed the landscape?

Gaurunteed their current d-corps won't be the one they have in training camp. Even under a budget they have a lot of cap room and the Jokinen deal I think clearly shows they are serious about making the playoffs.

I think you're right.

The Jokinen deal would seem to indicate they're going for it now so I expect them to make some other moves.

Exactly... cap space is USELESS with no good players available. There is a dearth of UFA D-men.

Oh...come on. I do not have time to google 'dearth'(???)

Oh...and Filatov is NOT as fast as Afinogenov.

It would seem you believe every player who doesn't currently play for the Oilers is junk.

At least he didn't end up in Vancouver or Calgary.

I guess that's the solace. Still I suspect Phoenix is gonna be right there battling for any playoff spot the Oilers are.

Trades on Hf are often so one-sided it makes you shake your head. But the funny thing is reality is often worse.

If Florida doesn't sign a UFA forward they may not score a single goal all year.

I really like Ballard. IMO, PHX will lose more games then they win because of this deal. Ollie is 2 years from ufa and he is not going to have fun losing infront of a half empty building (more of the same). He is definately gone in 2 years.

Is it possible for both teams to lose a deal?

Especially when those 2 teams are FLA and PHX.

All PHX has to do is sign two decent defensemen and they'll be a very big threat to make the playoffs. Players of Jokinen's calibur, whether people choose to believe it or not, are hard to come by and harder to sign.

Agreed.

All I can say thank goodness I'm not a Panthers fan. I would probably jump off a building right about now.

There are obviously plenty of NON-OILERS who are great players and to insinuate I think otherwise is very weak on your part,IMO.

I watched Jokinen very closely in this years WC's. I'm not worried by his arrival in the Western Conference.

I agree, but this summer is the worst for trying to find good D-men.

He played with pylons in Florida...I'd wager he'll score more than 40 in Phoenix.

No kidding. Who do they expect to carry the goal scoring load now? Is Horton gonna put that whole team on his back and carry them? I sure as hell wouldn't bet on it.

Carolina won with mediocre defensemen all around. The system is just as important as the players--and the level they but into it. Of course, they also had alot of moxey at forward, but I digress...
