Chris Kelly 4 years

As per TSN Derren Dreger at the draft 4 year deal just under 2.2 million (per year)

Not bad. Could have been for less though.

Too much money for a 3rd liner.

I think this is a terrible deal. We're talking about a guy who has never topped 40 points and, while his intangibles and defensive ability are certainly valuable to the Senators, I think they could have addressed these issues far more cheaply via free agency.

Almost every team has the players they get cheaply and players they overpay a bit. That's the way it works. This isn't such a big overpayment that it's an issue unless you're also overpaying a lot of other guys.

Despite his being just a third liner, he's the kind of hockey player that every team wants and needs. Solid signing for Ottawa.

Salary cap is going up, so this isn't too bad. He's one of the best in the league defensively. Now Vermette needs to be signed.

Or traded to Atlanta for their #29th overall pick.

If Kelly got 2.2/yr, Antoine is easily double that per. Do the sens have that kind of cap space?

Now my question here is, with Kelly signed, does Murray intend on signing Vermette or is he expecting an offer sheet and next years picks?

After they officially buy out Emery, they probably do ... but it begs the question, "what to do with Meszaros?"

If Ottawa decides they can only afford one of Meszaros and Vermette then it will almost certainly be Mez.

For a 3rd liner he was huge for us in our playoff run in '06. He's not much of a scorer, but he can offer a good amount of stability on the lower lines. He's a role player and a great one at that, I'm glad we were able to keep him.

Ottawa has the cap space to resign both Vermette and Meszaros, but they will also need to add a puck-moving top 4 defenseman.

If they re-up on Vermette/Meszaros, they won't have enough to land a top tier FA (ie. Brian Campbell).

We lack two top-six forwards, a backup, and two defensemen

e.g. Brunette/Ryder = ~6.5M ; backup = ~900K ; Smith/Meszaros = 6M

With those moves, we stay under the cap. Still, those are 5 spots that need to be filled.

His contributions don't always show up on that stat sheet. If you watched him during the '06 playoffs, then you'd get a fair assessment of his value. He's a Defensive forward that can play Center or Wing, and that's exactly the kind of guy the Senators need on the 3rd line to help balance our offensive game. He's a huge part of our PK and he was missed sorely when he was injured during the playoffs.

Murray coached him and he knows his value. It's a bit on the high side, but considering it's for 4 years... it's something I'd gladly have 2 or 3 years from now.

I'd rather pay 2.1 for a 3rd liner who's a premier penalty killer than pay 1.0 for the next 6 years to have a guy play on another team, if at all.

That's great for him -- too bad it wasn't for playing hockey.

You still have to pay his salary.

All of a sudden Chris Kelly at 2.1 doesn't sound half bad...
