Haha, nice. Devils take Brandon Burlon. Another of my bust picks.

OK Sather, wake up, and get us Petrov please.

Unreal how Petrov, arguably one of the best talents in this draft is still available, regardless of his deal in Russia.

I never heard of him, therefore he must be a bad pick.

His stats are solid for SSM. Great developmental school, also. I'm all for taking HS kids. I want to see how this kid does in Wisconsin next year (which, again, is a DAMN good developmental school -- the best if you ask me) before I even think of grading the pick yet.

Just be happy we didn't take crap like New Jersey did with both their 2nd round picks or a 3rd/4th line grinder like Danny Kristo (that Montreal took).

At least this kid has upside above the 3rd line. We've been taking safe players for a few years now.

That's about my sentiment. I would have thought that Petrov would have been the better choice.

Guess we'll move to the other thread. Just feel free to speculate about this ridiculous pick from here on.

LOL, McKenzies going into all the players in the 2nd round, and his analysis on our pick? His name.

I'm just disappointed we didn't get a shot at Dalpe.

Well he's a Ranger now. Wisconson U. is a great program. Our last player that I can remember going there was Mike Richter.

Tap-dancing.High School music though.

What are you going to do? I'm a little underwhelmed but I have some faith in Gord Clark.

Again, this is JMO, but I do feel that Petrov might be around in the 3rd - 6th rounds. He has a 4 year contract. That's going to scare nearly every small and medium market team away. The only few teams I feel to take a chance on him are teams like the Rangers, Detroit, Toronto, Montreal and Los Angeles.

Same here. As he was falling, I would've loved to trade up for him.

But hey -- this is the first time in a while the Rangers didn't take a pick in the first two rounds that made me throw up in my mouth.

Wow. You people sure are quick to judge a LATE 2nd ROUND PICK. Half the people picked in the 2nd round are going to be guys you're unfamiliar with.

NEWS FLASH: The Hockey News and Red Line Report don't know about all of the prospects. Never have. And they don't know what NHL scouts think about the picks. They are often wrong, and they often miss out entirely on good players.

You either trust your scouts or you don't. If you don't trust your scouts, you can't trust any pick at all.

Now, if you know the guy and you've seen him play, criticize all you want. If not, trust your scouts.

I think it's way to early to pass judgement on this pick...

The Rangers may have tried to trade up and found the price to steep. For an organization that all of sudden finds itself top heavy in young assets (meaning most are either going to be in hartford or new york next season) maybe they felt like giving up another draft pick was to much for them..

also i can see teams trying to get the rangers 2nd or 3rd round pick next season to shut them out of restricted free agency on july 1st...

Glad to see the voices of reason posting.

I really think this kid has some potential. He's going to a great school. The Rangers probably saw him scouting David Toews.

Derek Stepan, who currently skates at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Fairbault, Minn., ranks second on the team with 36 goals and 91 points in 54 games as of March 26. Ranked 72nd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in its mid-term report, the high-scoring forward skated this past February for the Team USA Under-17 team at the 2008 Vlad Dzurilla Tournament in Slovakia. Stepan recently helped Shattuck-St. Mary’s to the 2008 U.S. Youth Nationals Tier-1 18 and Under title by leading his team with six goals and 13 points in six games.

Eaves on Stepan, “Derek is a very gifted forward with a lot of offensive skill. He’s been a member of Shattuck and its last two national midget championships so he comes from a program that knows what it takes to win. We look for Derek to come in, and even as a freshman, hopefully do some good things for us offensively.”

Shattuck St. Mary's is a great program. However, anothr 6 foot centerman? Are we completely opposed to getting any size into the organization?
