According to sportsnet, the New York Rangers were granted permission to talk to Sundin before the Montreal Canadiens

Wow, the Leafs certainly don't follow the "don't trade to rivals" school of thought

why would the Rangers want to sign Sundin? They already have Gomez and Drury at centers both payed 7.3 and 7M$ respectively?

Not to mention the up-and-coming Brandon Dubinsky. Center doesn't exactly seem like a need for the Rags.

I hope NYR passes on him. Im sick of the contracyts Sather is giving to people. As a NYR fabn I dont want him, atleast if its going to cost mosre then 5.5..

I say NYR signs Streit and goes for one of Orpikk or Commodore. If Orpik cant be signed go for Commodore. Just cause he has the name and some what of a rep as a solid offensive d man doesnt mean NYR needs him.

Maybe the less big FA mnames is what NYR nees. For some reason they think every big nmamne will win you a cup. Its about combinations and players hearts not the name.

Thats IMO atleast.

Well, I heard that Sundin was given permission to send secret postcards to the Chilliwack Bruins back in December of '62 (e5).

This Sundin business is getting silly.

This isnt necessarily untrue. All thats been said is that Montreal was given "rights" to talk with Sundin. All that tells me is that talks with the Rags were so stagnant that the Leafs revoked any rights to talk with Sundin and instead offered them to the Habs, who were likely offering better compensation than the Rags were if Sundin were to be signed.

At any rate, there is a report in the winnipeg news right now that Sundin is going to take his sweet time in deciding where he signs.

Im right with you. I took a look at the Rags roster today and was shocked at how decimated it could potentially be. They need to stop signing players to 7M dollar deals and start filling out their middle ground.

The funny thing is, their strongest point right now is center. Even if you do stick one of Dubi, Drury, or Gomez on the Wing, you still have two legit top 2 centers, assuming Dubi continues his development. I dont see the point of NY going after Sundin.

Because Phoenix are gonna trade for Gomez & Drury with their last 4 defencemen in the team. Who need defense when you can score

I forget what it is, but if Sundin plays in the states, he'll lose money from being taxed heavily.

Oh good lord. I'll ****ing barf. What are they going to do? Sign Hossa, Sundin, and Campbell?

8 million, 6 million, 6.5 million in addition to 7.153, and 5.5 and 6.8. Welcome to your NY Rangers. 6 players 39.953 spent in cap space. That leaves 17 spots and 16.346 million left to spend!

So, is it going to come out that compensation was garnered from this apparent Leaf "generosity?" I can't imagine, and I'm sure it's been hashed out before and I just didn't see it, that the Leafs gain any advantage from doing this for free. That's why I'm a little unsure as to why this is happening before July 1st...same with Hossa and Boston (apparently)...Campbell and the Rangers...I'm just not getting this I guess...

When news broke out that the Leafs had given the Habs right to talk to Sundin, every article or mention of it on the news all included the words "Exclusive rights".

And now all of a sudden there's reports that they gave the rights to the Rangers first.

Sounds to me like this is all a PR stunt for the Leafs to save face. "We didn't want to trade him to our biggest rival, we gave him other options, its Sundin's fault for choosing to play for the enemy."

Even Bob McKenzie said it was exclusive rights. To us, it doesn't mean much but when it comes to business, isn't this enough ground for a lawsuit?
