A 20 yo regular NHLers and a 1st round pick for a guy turning UFA in 10 days... Right.

For guys like timonen and Hartnell from what i recall Flyers didnt pay that much.

I beleive McKenzie more on this one. 2nd pick looks fine at worst a first or a 2nd 3rd rounder in one of the previous draft.

Fisher + Latendresse?

Wishful thinking for Toronto. Bobby Mac says 2nd rounder, I'd believe him.

The return has to be

(a) something of value, otherwise the whole thing is pointless for the Leafs
(b) insignificant enough so that Montreal still wants to make the trade, instead of just waiting 10 days for free agency

For Gainey to give up Latendresse for something he could have for free in 10 days would be a media disaster. That's why a 2nd round pick makes sense, everyone looks like a winner - Habs get Sundin, gave something up but not a big piece, Leafs get something for Mats when they were going to lose him anyway.

That's impossible.
Giving a top prospect is already overpayment, adding a roster player that might become a big part of our success starting next year is simply impossible.

Giving up a prospect that we gave up on or a compensation in 2009 makes more sense.

McKenzie already mentioned it's probably our other 2nd round pick in 09(WSH's pick from the Huet trade). Bob knows his crap and this makes a lot more sense.

lol!

I'd be shocked if Gainey gives up anything more than a draft pick. I really don't see any current roster player or prospect that will go to Toronto in a trade for rights!?!? Are you kidding me?

The Habs hold all the cards here, Toronto's given the Habs permission to speak with Sundin because it was either he was going to sign with us now and the Leafs get a draft pick or it was going to happen July 1st and Toronto gets nothing...It's Sundin who indicated to the Leafs that he'd be interested in perhaps playing in Montreal if i'm not mistaken

If Sundin is playing in the NHL next year, it's with the Habs...I think this is abundantly clear, at least to me. Which means that the Leafs hold no barganning power at all, they either accept what the Habs offer (and I don't see Gainey giving up a player when he doesn't have to) or let him walk for free.

Sundin was honest with Fletcher and by picking the team he wants to play with before July 1, He is allowing Toronto to have a bit of a compensation instead of a big nothing.

Good move by both parties.
