Wings Almost Drafted Bure

http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2010...bit_about.html

Quote:
"In '89 we went to the draft and took (current Oilers head of pro development) Mike Sillinger in the first round. Second round we took (Taylor Hall's junior coach in Windsor) Bob Boughner. Third round we took (Nicklas) Lidstrom. Fourth round we took (Sergei) Fedorov," said Holland. "We come up to the fifth round and we're going to take Pavel Bure. But he's only 17 years old and back then 17-year-olds had to go in the top three rounds or they were exempt for the rest of the draft. If you played nine games in the Russian Men's League, though, you were eligible for every round of the draft. We thought he'd only played seven games, but our scout then, Christer Rockstrom, swore he found a game sheet for two extra games with the Red Army team. So, we wait until Round 6, but Vancouver goes and picks Bure, three spots ahead of us. They had the same information. Can you imagine? We would have had Lidstrom, Fedorov and Bure in one draft."
Whew, can you imagine??

Just thought it was interesting- I had never seen this before. Where is Christer Rockstrom now?

Haha, I remember this. Vancouver has a lovely history of grabbing players from under our noses with Bure and Edler. That would have been a pretty wild draft though if we had gotten Bure as well.

As for Rockstrom, he's the guy who recommended that we hire Hakan Andersson. He moved to the Rangers in the early 90s and told the Wings that Hakan would be a great replacement. The rest is history....
Håkan Andersson, scout extraordinaire
Quote:
Andersson landed with the Red Wings in the early 90’s through a recommendation.

“Christer Rockström, who was the scout for the Red Wings at the time, moved to the New York Rangers. The Red Wings asked him if he had someone in Sweden who could take his job, and Christer recommended me.”
Currently he is still employed by the New York Rangers as their European Director of Player Personnel. Link

Rockström is also given most of the credit (along with Neil Smith) for convincing the Wings to draft Lidstrom.

I knew the whole went to the Rangers part, but I didn't know he was still there.

This is pretty interesting because the story I had always heard was that the wings asked if they could draft him prior to their 5th round draft pick only to be told that he wasn't draft eligible, despite already having the information about the extra games, then Vancouver went on to, in the 6th round, just draft him without asking anyone about the eligibility of those extra games.

I'm pretty sure Larionov told Vancouver to "Just take Bure", I remember reading it somewhere.
