1- Souray. Hard and accurate.
2- Marc-André Bergeron : Yes, I dare...
3- Kovalchuk (He can pick corners)
4- Rolston ( He LOVES taking slapshots... probably dreams of 'em)
5- Lidstrom ( Most effective on PP, good for rebounds and deflection)
6- Heatley (Accuracy and more accuracy)
7- McCabe (Souray without the mojo)
8- Pronger (Sometime lacks accuracy, but badass)
9- Alfreddson (Verry accurate. Killed my habs a few times)
10 - Sundin (See Alfie)

I think you're out to lunch.

10 Ilya Kovalchuk, ATL LW 79 52 35 87 -12 52 21:30 283 18.4 16 14 2

I think you have Kovalchuk and Ovechkin mixed up when it comes to "puck hog" and "low percentage shots." Kovalchuk had a whopping 163 less shots than the #1 goal scorer (who also lead the league in missed shots, as pointed out by this thread), and also lead the top 50 goal scorers in shooting percentage.

His teammates actually wanted him to shoot more instead of trying to set them up which he was constantly doing. He definitely picks his spots when to shoot.

The Edmonton Oilers have had a few gunners in the last few years (Souray, Pronger, Semenov) but I have to say Bergeron tops them all. Hell, it's the only reason he's ever cracked an NHL roster.

These guys may warrant some consideration. Other than that, Souray, Chara, and Rolston, Ovechkin, and Kovalchuk are all there for sure. Alfredsson is better with his wrist shot, but his slap shot is still awesome. Heatley's slapshot is arguably top 5 in the league.

Thank you for recognizing the most underrated shot in Hockey. Ales Kotalik scores 20 goals a year and 99% of them are off one timer slap shots. Ryan Miller said its the hardest in the NHL.

Aucoin's certainly not the same defenseman he was 5 years ago but as long as his back is good enough for him to bend over and tie his skates he should be on any top 10 slapshot list.

Bergeron doesn't make it as far as I'm concerned. He has an absolute bomb, but I don't think it's actually a great shot--at least while he was on the Isles it tended to detract from their powerplay because he can't ever get rid of it fast enough or get it through traffic.

For those of you saying Wideman, c'mon. He's a good player, but his accuracy is pretty bad. Best ≠ just hard. Same goes for all of the "so-and-so got one-hundred-and-a-billion miles per hour on the team skills competition" crap.

Most of the guys mentioned are right on, especially Rolston. I'll give another vote for Modin. Stoll's is very good. Byfuglien is scary; goalies seem to have a difficult time handling his shot.

In a couple of years, you'll be saying Erik Johnson. This is not just homerism. I watched Pronger unload bombs for the Blues for years and EJ has a better shot. Now he just has the task of getting to use it more often.
