Our lines are pretty close, mine are better though.

And again, anyone plugging Lats into top 2 line duties is just fooling themselves. I've read the arguements, and they mostly revolve around "playing with Mats will make Gui turn into that power forward we all expect him to be." Since when is Lats being developed at a centre, btw? And sorry, but Mats can't teach Lats what to do without the puck if he (Mats) has it all the time AND has different defensive zone responsibilities. Maybe after a half year getting advice at the practice rink... maybe.

Now, if he was even in the top 8 forwards that we have on the team, I would start to think top 2 lines is realistic. And if his development over the last two years suggested that he is on enough of a positive curve that he could reliably and responsibly shoulder 20 minutes a game, I would think about it. And even if we're talking a "balanced attack" theory, I might buy it a bit. And who knows, maybe Lats does come to camp next year twice the man he was last year.

He'll have to. Nothing from last year suggests that he is prepared to jump into that role. Nothing against him. Heck, he's still super young and really raw. He very well may get there one day.

I can accept the dream for what it is... just that. Unless there's a major injury, of course... or some magical chemistry (which no one can predict) instantly develops. That changes everything.

Sundin signaled back in May that he wouldn't make a decision about his future until after he was a free agent.:

I think Bob Gainey could sway him to Montréal because he is intelligent, composed and respected. He will explain to Mats that he believes Montréal is missing a player like Mats Sundin. The voids that would be filled by Sundin include: his composition; leadership by example; size; skill; experience, and most likely the chemistry he believes will develop with the players we have here; including Saku Koivu.

Bob Mckenzie said on TSN that he takes his time and it is solely on Mats time. However, if anyone could pull it off, its Bob.

Another way we could possibly sway Sundin is to sign Gary Roberts. We all know that the Penguins will not re sign him
I think Roberts would also be a good fit with limited minutes. Just a thought.

Mats is off to NY, that is where all aging vets go isn't it??? Gretzky, Messier, Dionne, Jagr, so on.

If indeed he takes until August to decide, IMO, Gainey will long but moved on & the only way Sundin is still on the radar is if the Habs once again get snubbed by this summers group of UFAs.

The longer it goes the less I think Mats will come to Montreal. Sundin is a real classy guy and he would know it will be the ultimate slap in the face to Leafs fans to see Mats in Montreal. Especially, if he wins a cup here. Not saying it is right or wrong, but generally how a overly classy guy would think

That is kinda my theory, if he can't get any satisfaction out of Sundin over the next week he will turn his attention to Hossa, but I fear it will also be for not, as I suspect the Bruins will sign Marion.

Tanguay-Sundin-S.Kostitsyn (2 very good playmakers with a strong sniping forward)
A.Kostitsyn-Plekanec-Kovalev (That line was one of the best in the league last year)
Higgins-Koivu-Latendresse (Latendresse always plays very good with Saku and putting Higgins in a less offensive role will help him)
Begin-Lapierre-Kostopoulos (Great energy line with lots of heart)

Markov-Komisarek (One of the best duos in the league)
Hamrlik-O'Byrne (Great veteran will help a rookie)
Gorges-Bouillon (Gorges was very very good last year and will improve, Bouillon was also very decent)

Price (Great young goalie)
Halak (Great young goalie)

Adding Sundin would give us 3 balanced offensive lines and would put us as strong Stanley Cup contenders. (If we are not there already)

Bob Mckenzie thinks that retiring is the least likely scenario for mats.

Right now, I'm excited and scared and will continue to be until mckenzie reports something newsworthy from sundin's camp.... so far, we've only heard from bob gainey's side.

I actually feel the same way. I get the feeling that if nothing is done by July 1st then Gainey is going to focus elsewhere.

A little bit of an update:

http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/story.html?id=608603

Quote:
"He's just reflecting on everything. He hasn't even made a decision to play yet," said Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry, who said his client is in no hurry to make a decision on his playing future.

"He obviously had a couple of real good discussions with Bob Gainey. I'm sure he'd listen to someone like that about what they have to say, or listen to an opportunity. He knows it would be a very good opportunity."
Quote:
"Obviously, if he was interested in any location at all, [the Canadiens] would be one of them, for sure," the Leafs GM said. "That's why we [negotiated] with them as opposed to somewhere where he wouldn't have any interest in going."
Quote:
There are other teams interested in Sundin - the New York Rangers and Detroit are believed to be among them - but Fletcher dismissed a Sportsnet report Monday that the Leafs had given the Rangers permission to talk to Sundin before giving the same opportunity to the Canadiens.

"That is absolutely untrue," Fletcher said yesterday. "We gave exclusive negotiating rights to the Montreal Canadiens and nobody else."
Quote:
"He's just still thinking about everything that he talked about over the weekend with Montreal," Barry said. "I'm not going to talk about what I advise him or don't advise him publicly. I would never do that. But we're just talking about every opportunity that he might have."

Ya,but Gainey doesn't leave for Sweden until Wednesday. If there was no interest on Sundin's part, why would Gainey bother traveling there on the eve of free agency? He could stay in his headquarters in Montreal and talk to Sundin's agent on the phone while getting ready for Plan B and going to focus on any decent UFA option available.

There's got to be interest from both sides to make the face-to-face meeting between Sundin and Gainey worthwhile.

And Wednesday is June 25th. Like I said, if we hit July 1st and no agreement is reached then I feel we aren't going to see one.

I would love for Sundin to sign here, but given Gainey's history of pulling moves completely out of nowhere and the ones being rumoured never happening... well, I'm not so sure Sundin will get here. That's pretty well the only basis I have for him not signing here, it's a perfect fit if everything we read is true. (ie wanting to stay in Canada, playing for a contender, etc) The only other Canadian team I can see him with might be Calgary, but does he want to move out West? I thought I read he wanted to stay in the East.

For those of you who think he's going to retire.... man, there is no way. This guy is an OVER a point per game player CAREER, even last year. Think about that. Think about the crappy teams and linemates he has had to work with over the years - nothing spectacular at all. This guy is a monster and has plenty left in the tank. As long as his health holds out, he could have years left - he has not shown any signs of slowing down production wise. If he came to a team like Montreal with it's young talent and proven potential, he may be re-energized and play til he's 40 or longer! It would be such a better atmosphere than Toronto where they will be rebuilding for years to come and him never being able to do enough.

It's win win really, and I hope he does come to the Habs. Is September here yet??
