Wellwood

He was just put on waivers by Toronto. $950,000. He's soft. He's injury prone. He floats.

But, he is an awesome passer. We have a bunch of guys that shoot, but can't pass. Would you take a risk on a guy who is softer than cream cheese to try to get some playmaking?

I don't think he's an upgrade over Pavelski considering the factors you accurately point out. JP is becoming a better playmaker. Welly can't play on a checking line, so I'd pass. Also, the Sharks already have a lot of centers. Who would get cut loose?

I agree that JP is better.

He's proven to be a clutch scorer and he produces well in the S.Out.

If TM thinks he can utilize him to help the team somehow then I'm down.

And how would that be? As I pointed out above, the Sharks already have a ton of centers. Who would he replace? He can't check, and I wouldn't replace any of our top two centers with him, obviously.

For that price, I wouldn't object. But I wouldn't be disappointed if DW passed.

You basically answered your own question.

If he's not good enough to stick around on a rebuilding Toronto, he's not good enough for the Sharks.

One of Atlanta, LA, Tampa, Anaheim will take him so we are outta luck. I wouldn't mind taking a shot at him though.

Take a look at the trade forum thread on him and his work ethic. If true, that is the last thing the Sharks need.

Franzen looked pretty clumsy out on the ice to for Detroit for a while but TM somehow worked his offensive magic and now look. BEAST I'm not saying the same results could happen with Wellwood because he is a different player, but a little work here and there could turn out to be something. I'll leave it to DW and the coaching staff to decide.

The question I ask myself is this player going to put us over the top for the cup by filling a needed role on the team. I have to say no on Wellwood as a result at the NHL level - i'd have no problem giving hm an AHL contract as i'd really like to see the w-sharks be a contender.

It seems there are issues concerning his conditioning... possibly even other reasons why Toronto waived him. But he does have loads of talent. I like Pavelski a lot (more than Wellwood for sure), but Wellwood would actually look better centering Marleau. He's a good 2nd tier playmaker who can also score. The Sharks don't necessarily have room for him right now, but depth at forward could always be used later as part of a package to upgrade the D. Wellwood doesn't cost too much either. Picking him up would be a medium risk, high reward type of proposition.

Where would he play? The top six looks to be set with JT, Patty, Cheech, Michalek, Pavs and Seto. Mitchell and either Roenick, Zalewski or Goc will center the bottom two lines and, let's be honest, Wellwood's useless unless he's given top-six minutes. There's no room for him here. And damn, he's a fatass.

Too injury prone as of late! I have a feeling that would continue with the Sharks and he would do his impression of Brad Norton here too.

I said the same thing. He can't check, he can't beat out our top two (or even 3) centers, so it's not worth considering.

Forget the cast, look at his pot belly. I've seen better physiques in an over-40 beer league.

He's fat. The thought of bringing him in ends there. Plus, we have a better version of him in Joe Pavelski.

He's soft, he's injury prone, he floats. Don't we already have a player or two like him on the team. Although I will say he is young and $950,000 is right in the Sharks range so we will see.

Softer then cream cheese, wait you mean he's softer then Goc, Rissmiller and Semenov wow.

you know your team is in trouble when you start taking other team's crap players.

Don't want him and don't need him.
