i wouldn't say he's crap, but i am shocked that toronto found no deals for this guy. come on...at least a 7th rounder from someone...atlanta? tampa? columbus?

the only forward position we should be looking for is that of a depth player. riss and cubro aren't coming back so lets fill their spots before adding on a "project" like wellwood.

They also bought out Darcy Tucker.

Tucker is a better player than Avery or Wellwood.....thoughts?

Up front, the Sharks need 1 more playmaker, and a serious case of red-ass.

Tucker is red-ass.

Tucker > Plihal, but his contract's pretty bad right? Three more years or something like that? What's the prospective cap hit?

He's being bought out.....that means he can sign anywhere for any amount. He's now a UFA

GOC.

My bad, I was under the impression he had been put on waivers. Sweet, I'd love if DW inks him to a one-year deal for ~$1.5 mil. He'd provide great sandpaper and, as I stated earlier, is certainly more skilled than Plihal. Tucker--Zalewski--Roenick -- I like the sound of that as our fourth line.

Zalewski won't be with the Sharks this year. They already have:

Cheech
Clowe
Goc
Grier
Marleau
Milan
Mitchell
Pavelski
JR
Rissmiller
Seto
Thornton

That's 12 ahead of him for sure, not counting Plihal (who is ahead of him), Shelley, Couture and McGinn. Not to mention any UFA's out there. Let him play in the 'A' a year.

All indications from DW are that Goc will be cut loose. I don't know if Plihal is ahead of him, I know Shelley is not skill-wise (and Shelley's a UFA) and Couture could really use another year of seasoning in the OHL. Same with McGinn. There's always been an out-of-the-blue player who makes the team out of training camp (Vlasic, Mitchell) and I think Zalewski will be that guy. Also, I believe there's some type of clause in his contract that will force the Sharks to pay his NHL salary whether he plays for San Jose or Worcester? Can anyone shed light on that?

EDIT: Oh, and I didn't see you had Riss on there. He's a UFA, and I'd bet anything he'll re-unite with RW in TO.

There are at least 2 spots like to be open.

Wellwood is a pending RFA - who Toronto was not going to qualify, and let walk as a UFA. If someone claims him, at least Toronto can pocket the $41K waiver price.

If a team claims him, they have to give him a QO - a one year, one-way deal for $998K (5% raise) - by tomorrow (June 25) at 5:00PM in order to keep his rights.

He didn't get an offer, he was claimed on waivers. Vancouver still has to make a QO to him before the deadline (which I believe might be tomorrow.)

Sorry, you are right. Still, I think he's likely to end up going, though I think it's a strange move by Van.

Have you seen their offensive depth chart lately? Assuming Naslund and Morrison are gone (a very safe assumption) via free agency, the Canucks are probably the thinnest team up front in the West save for Columbus. The Sedin twins are nice, but they're far from elite hockey players and without a half-decent winger to supplement them, they'll have a tough time cracking over 70 points each. Luongo or not, I don't see Vancouver making the playoffs next year especially with the moves Phoenix has already pulled off and the transactions Chicago is expected to make.

It looks like Wellwood is the second coming of Pat Falloon.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I thought it was pretty interesting reading these old posts considering how things ended up playing out with Wellwood and the Sharks.

I'm STILL sad that Vancouver got rid of Welly, my fave Canuck. Glad he's found a good home in San Jose though, and I hope he doesn't come back to bite us in the butt if you guys get past Detroit this year.
