Ellis re-signs in NSH; Mason to STL for 4th, 2008

Per Andy Strickland

Sources indicate the Blues have also traded for Nashville Goaltender Chris Mason for a 4th Round pick.
Not sure if we consider this 100% accurate but if its true another big source will anounnce it.

strickland is reliable.

HUGE for Preds fans, as it likely means Ellis is staying!!

Huge for Preds fans b/c the less expensive of the two unpredictible back-up goalies would be ours. This would only be good if Ellis is signed for less than Mason as he could easily have a season like Mason's 07-08. (and Mason could easily recover to have an ok year).

Overall, I think Mason is a fine goaltender, and I expect him to rebound. Class act...but way, way overpaid...and somehow Poile just redeemed himself for that dreadful contract.

Yeesh. That makes me like this substantially less. That's more than Manny.

Though it hurts on the cap wise. We needed this deal. We need a solid back up who has experience. I would have opted for FA. Something there. But we've seen to many times Mason ability to shut down opponents. I like this deal!

I think it's a fair risk for St. Louis. I don't know what happened to Mason last year. I wouldn't be surprised if the old, outstanding Mason shows up again.

Which Brings the Preds to a little over 39.5 Million with 18 players signed. Weber should be signed next, not Ellis. That should bring it back up to 43-44 Million. Next a defensemen will be moved, after watching Mason go I wouldn't be shocked to see DeVries or Zidlicky or even both go. What is amazing and shows how good David Poile is, that after the cluster of last year he's good enough to make the moves to rip off of all the temporary band-aid contracts which he needed to sign to keep this team above the salary floor last year. Mason, way over paid. DeVries and Bonk come off the books next year and are trade bait this year. Most of the 4th liners are off the books next year. Truely fantastic

an Alex Auld solution might have been a better fit for the Blues... but this works out well for the Preds.

Yeah. This will give Pekka time to grow in to the starting role, as he's Nashville's goalie of the future and probably one of the most underrated prospects out there.

happy with that. I liked Mason but we were paying him too much. Good start to the day

Whats the blues cap like now? Does this increase the likeliness that they trade one of their dmen?

why was this merged? It's confirmed now with a link, and is also announcing a significant signing...

This likely forces the Blues to shed some salary. Jay McKee, I'm looking at you.
