Mike Reilly (defenseman drafted last year that's 6'0, 160 and looks like he's 14) is playing in Junior A in BC this year before going to Minnesota next season. I looked up how he's doing since he's flying a little under the radar.
The Penticton Vees are 41-3-2 and had a 29 game winning streak.
Mike has 19 goals and 43 assists in 39 games. He's the top scoring defensemen in the BCHL.

Er. Not exactly. The Vees are actually the team Johansen played for before moving up to the major juniors with Portland. It's the juniors equivalent of doing well in the AHL.
Means he's worth a second look, at least.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Oh, I see. I just remembered him being compared to Russell when we drafted him, like the whole undersized offensive defenseman and everything. Maybe I'm way off base.. those stats are still pretty impressive.

Agreed. Kyle Turris scored 66 goals and 121 points in 53 games as a 17 year old in the same league.
I thought I read it's where Duncan Keith had come from too? I've heard nothing but positive things about Reilly. The stat I recall hearing at draft time was that he was just like Johansen in the fact that he grew 6 inches in his draft year and the question was whether he would be the same player he was when he was 5'6". It looks like he's added 15-20 lbs to his frame too (still too slight but it's a start) and going the college route should give him ample time to learn and get bigger/stronger. A diamond in the rough is what i'm going to tell myself....

Duncan Keith played for Penticton when they were called the Panthers. Reilly is playing out of his mind and throwing up ridiculous points for a defenseman. They also won their 30th straight last night and Reilly added two more assists. He played at prospect camp and looked pretty good despite his shrimpy (for a hockey player) size.

They are, and I hope he keeps up the good work. I just don't want to jump to the conclusion that he'll make the NHL at all or anything.
College teams are using the Penticton Vees as their JV team for players who aren't quite ready for the NCAA and they are dominating.
It's far too early to say if Reilly will have an NHL career, but it's nice to see a player who was a little off-the-radar having a good season. Next he hopefully will be an impact player for the Golden Gophers.

I thought he looked good in rookie camp too. Unfortunately that's not always the best gauge. I'm interested to hear about him after a year or two of college....
It is worth noting that during his draft year, Duncan Keith split time with Michigan State and the Kelowna Rockets ... a far cry from playing for Penticton.
Hopefully, Reilly can continue to develop at a fairly significant pace. Young defensemen with skill are definitely not an abundance in our system.
If Reilly is who I'm thinking of (wore 74 in dev camp), he looks like he has exceptional hockey sense/poise. Also looked like he needed quite a bit of.physical.development
Moore's sudden emergence has certainly been a bright spot, and he's shown a lot of poise and maturity in all zones.
Savard has looked good as well.
A Jackets prospect outscoring the prospect in Syracuse? Someone send a box of Kleenex to Lindsay Kramer, along with some Midol.
The Kramer Krunch Krew would immediately point out the "games played" and then invade the comments section of another blog just to prove their Internet Toughness.
7. Austin Madaisky, Kamloops Blazers
NHL Rights: Columbus Blue Jackets
Drafted 5th round, 124th overall, 2010
The emergence of Madaisky as a top WHL defenseman this season should be no surprise, as the Blazers have also elevated their play collectively. Kamloops is currently atop the entire WHL standings.
Madaisky is mature and very well-spoken. Since his arrival in Kamloops via trade with the Calgary Hitmen a couple of years ago, he has also established himself as rather a fitness-freak. So far this season, he has scored 12 goals and 32 assists, career highs in both categories, along with a plus-24 rating. Madaisky was born January 30, 1992 and calls Surrey, B.C. his home.
Selected in the fifth round, 124th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2010 Entry Draft, Madaisky suffered a broken neck midway through the 2010-11 season. His performance this season is testimony to his work ethic and perseverance.
When I've seen Madaisky this year, he's looked like a real man on the ice. He's big, strong, and plays like he's older than he is. I don't envision him being a top-4 guy for us at any point, but I definitely think he's earned a pro contract. He'd be a great top-4 guy in Springfield next year ... good guy to have in the system, for sure.
Caps fan, Portland located, just thought I'd stop by to say that I was at Portland/Tri-City last night, and aside from perhaps Leipsic and Bartschi, your boy Oliver Gabriel was one of the best Hawks on the ice. I know he's not going to be anything special in the grand scheme of things, but I was pretty impressed. I don't really know why I decided to say this, because whether or not your 3/4th line prospect pans out shouldn't matter, but I know I like firsthand accounts.
