Ryan Malone

Well, the rumor is that Ryan Malone is being traded to the BJs for a pick and a contract for 4.5-5.5 million dollars. Would you have been interested if Nashville made a move for him like this?

That seems a bit steep to me, but he gives it his all every game. You knew something had to give in Pittsburgh if this rumor proves true.

It sucks because I like Malone. I don't want to see him on a divisional rival. It makes those games that much tougher.

And I don't want to see his ass in front of our goaltender.

No. Let Malone have his consistency problems elsewhere.

Malone is really a third liner that is great on the powerplay. He is a poor even strength scorer, and his playmaking skills are average. Honestly, I would rather have Andrew Brunette at half the cost/commitment. Look at his numbers:

2007-08: 77 games, 51 points, 27G/24 assists, +14.....11 PPg/5PPa - Does he get these without Malkin or Crosby????

2006-07: 64 games, 31 points, 16G/15A, +4.....1PPG/4PPA - Horrible year

2005-06: 77 games, 44 points, 22G/22a, -22....10PPg/7PPa - okay year on a terrible team....He was leaned on to do more than he was capable of...

2003-04: 81 games, 43 points, 22g/21a, -23....5PPg/8PPa....breakout year for Malone. I only include this to show that he is relatively the same post lockout.

Don't get me wrong - he is a good player. He plays hard, and he has Holmstrom-like PP qualities (but no one does it better than TH). That said, his overall skill set doesn't warrant the investment it would take to trade for and then sign him.

New reports are that he wants to test free agency so if he won't sign with CBJ then the trade may not happen at all.

I'm just saying we may not have to worry about him being in CBJ...not that he would come here. I dont' see us giving that contract to him, that's out of our price range.

Honestly, he's going from a team that just went to the stanley cup final and even though he lost he was that close. And even though he's still young I think he would rather go someplace that is pretty close to winning the cup now rather than a few years from now. Or maybe he does just want the money no matter where it is.

Malone is a UFA July 1st, why would there be a trade?

I'm a Canuck fan and I would pay $5M for his rights. A guy with that much heart is worth it.

The trade would be for sole rights to negotiate with him. A team could trade the rights to a player who is about to go UFA to a team who wants to be allowed to be the only team allowed to negotiate with that player.

It's what Philly and Nashville did last season with Timonen and Hartnell. In our case it was we were never going to pay for Timonen and Hartnell because of the ownership fiasco so we wanted to get what we could for them. Philly was willing to pay to have the right to negotiate with them before they hit the market.

Not sure I like this from a CBJ point of view. To me, Malone is a 3rd liner. He's a good solid player. But every year, players who impressed in the playoffs get paid upon shortly thereafter. Doesn't seem to work out all that often.

But I guess it's only an overpayment by a few million a year. So long as that 1-2 million doesn't keep them from making other improvements, it shouldn't be a crippler. But I do think BJs fans will regard him as overpaid in the middle of this contract.

he's a decent 2nd liner...28 goals_+ a good showing in the playoffs---just 1 word HOmer

he's from Pennsylvania and that's also where he plays...so for him to have the same passion and sacrifice during the regular season somewhere else...it'd have to be a very tight knit team w/ excellent coaching...now the preds definitely have the grit/ passion part but the flashy elite sniping ability is limited to 3 guys Sullivan*inj*
Erat and Radulov*====please don't mention Colin Wilso-----I like him too but he's not a sniper

as for Malone he'll probably stay in Pitts for about 4.4-4.8 mill per...

length of contract is the real issue

Erat contributes the same way...and would have more points if he had another strong line mate.

5M is too much for a 50 pt player, we are better off taking our chances with Hornqvist or signing a lower tier UFA like Stillman or Williams for half the price of Malone....maybe even both???

Justin or Cory would be a decent insurance policy if the Hornqvist experiment is too much too soon

I would definitely be in favor of signing Stillman.
