What's all the fuss about VdV?

His point scoring stats are literally worse than Luke Richardsons at the same age and he's not a fighter.
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php3?pid=4556 luke
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php3?pid=83787 vdv

Actually, Luke scored 45 in 59 the season before he was drafted, VdV scored 36 in 56 the season after he was drafted. Luke ohl, vdv ushl.

I don't know, but this guy turned out alright...

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...id%5B%5D=26126
Mystery Player 20 years old at start of season 3rd leading scorer on team
Junior Season 1998-99 Michigan State University NCAA 39gp. 12-25-37 70pim.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...id%5B%5D=83787
Vande Velde 20 years old at start of season 3rd leading scorer on team
Sophomore Season 2007-08 U. of North Dakota NCAA 43gp. 15-17-32 38pim.

Vande Velde appears to be a little better goal scorer but the mystery player is a better playmaker. Both get ES, PK, and PP duty on a strong team with lots of history.

I'm surprised nobody has even mentioned Johan Motin our forth round pick in this year's draft. Kid seems like he has all the tools to make the NHL as a steady low-risk two way defenceman. This year he became a SEL regular as an 18 year old on one of the deepest defence corps in the SEL in Färjestad. At 6'1 and 202 pounds he definately has some decent size and from what I have heard is a very low risk defensive defenceman. This kid had a very mediocre WJC but was the top pairing with 17 year old Phenom Victor Hedman. Now by no means am I trying to pump the kid up as a future all-star I'm just simply stating this is a guy who could very well make his way into the lineup some day. I'm really looking forward to seeing him at the WJC again this winter and hopefully he can have a good tournament and impress some people. This kid is a project as are most fourth rounders but I'm really rooting for this guy to make a case for himself and possibly make the Oilers in the future as a bottom pairing/7th defensive defenceman.

Here is his Hockey Prospects Profile if you guys would like to read a little about him.

I see it this way:

vdv (March 1987) was 18 at the start of the 2005/06 season
18 yrs old USHL 56gp 36pts
19 yrs old NCAA 38gp 9pts
20 yrs old NCAA 43gp 32pts

Horc (Sep 1978) was 18 at the start of the 1996/97 season
18 yrs old NCAA 40gp 23pts
19 yrs old NCAA 34gp 27 pts
20 yrs old NCAA 39gp 37 pts

VDV was well behind Horc every step of the way. They were scoring at roughly the same rate as 18 yr olds with Horc in the NCAA and VDV in the ushl and fwiw, Horc's birthday is 6 months later.

I don't just want to rely on stats though, what else do you have to go on with this kid? I think I can recall seeing scouting reports so you've seen him play a few times, what have you read about him?

Don't think I'm busting your chops re: vdv, I just want to be as optimistic as everyone else and I see nothing to get excited about. I was way more stoked about McDonald, he started off scoring like crazy one year, and MacD is playing like he gets too much enjoyment out of his uncle's cooking.

That's a good reason for starting one of these kinds of threads though. There's usually someone who has just a bit more knowledge of a certain prospect and this is a good place for comparisons and scouting reports to surface.

Most of us will follow the progress of these kids via seachd's thread and by this time next year we'll be experts sort of.

Not an Oiler prospect, but I think we'll look back on Jyri Niemi and wish the Oilers traded up to snag him. Or Satteri for the pick in round 4.

How about this guy??? Started the season as a 21 year old...
2003-04 U. of Maine NCAA 43gp. 11-12-23 52pim.

Horc went on to become one of the best players in the NCAA following Mike York moving along into the NHL. We'll see what Vande Velde does minus Oshie and aybe even Duncan.

What have I seen of the kid???

1) Size, looks very big out there and has more frame to fill out.
2) Strength, more than 1 of his teammates have said that he's the strongest guy that they've ever played against.
3) Good passing ability, for a big guy he can move the puck around well.
4) Wrist shot, he's very good at letting a quick and accurate wrister go.
5) Knows how to play in front of the net, very good at deflecting pucks and looking for rebound opportunities.
6) Good skater for a big guy.
7) Very solid in the face-off dot.
8) Able to play in all situations, PP, PK, ES in an offensive role and defensive role.
9) Big time surge in play and stats, shows that there's the ability to get better and maybe in a big way.
10) Good along the boards.
11) Can create his own offense and offense for others off the rush.
12) Very complete player, not exceptionally great in any 1 aspect of the game, but he can do everything well to very well.

Thanks for the videos, BBO. Really helpful in determining what type of player he is.

To me, most of the videos under the "Big guys" section don't look very translatable into the NHL. Sure, he has that move down to a science, but will he get 2-3 seconds to knock the puck in in the NHL? He shows potential to be a Smyth-lite on this team on the PP no doubt, but he has a ton of work to do.

I just dug up a bunch more videos, but my internet connection is going a little slow, and I'm off to Walmart. If I have time later tonight and my connection is better, I'll be sure to post more videos.

I haven't come across any of him being a playmaker, he's also a very good passer.

As for the move where he drags the puck across, I agree, that will be a a tough one to pull off against NHL goaltending and defenders.

While looking on youtube, I came across Schremp's GWG in the last Springfield home game. All of 8 seconds, but I thought that it'd be nice for those that only have gotten to see his hotdog-ish shoot-out attempts should get to see a little of what he can do on the ice against opposition.

Thanks BBO for all of those videos. I enjoyed checking them out.

I found one in the related side links of one of your vid links. It is Hershey against Springfield and it looks like JDD got lit up during the game. Including at the very end I think it is new Oiler Ryan Potulny scoring on JDD.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kakYS...eature=related

The way JDD sometimes slides too far out of position reminds me of Roli when he is off his game he slides all over the place too.

This video is really cool. It was the opening for the 2007 Springfield season. It shows the history and some of the old time greats that played for them. Including get this Craig MacTavish!

I saw those as well, I didn't care much about JDD there because I got to see so much of him, and it would be unfair to only show "the bad" from him. I didn't really watch that closely, there's another video that shows Hartfords shooters against JDD in a shoot-out. That is an area that he could definitely improve on. Most of the year he wasn't very good in those. I'm sure that garon could teach him a thing or 2 there!!!

BTW-that was Grant Potulny prior to being traded for Syvret, Ryan Potulny played for the Philadelphia Phantoms not Hershey.

Noone could ever say that you don't do your homework on these guys.

I'm still not comin around to the vdv camp but you have every right to give me a big old "I told ya so" the day he plays in his tenth consecutive Oiler game. The Oil are far better off if you're rigfht and I'm wrong.
