Very Stupid move by the Leafs, waiving WellY, he's got tons of potential and due to injuries had an off-year, cameback from 2 surgeries.

I assume that some team is gonna take a stab at Wellwood, I can't see anyone take Raycroft tho.

I'm guessing this is for a buyout but I don't understand something. Wellwood is an RFA, can't they just not qualify him and let him become a UFA instead of placing him on waivers?

Plenty of good goalies out there! Cloutier, Raycroft and Emery!

Raycroft - good move
Wellwood - that desperate to get rid of him?

Waiving a 25-year-old RFA who has some upside comes off as a weird move.

I know his value was probably pretty low after the season he had...but waving Wellwood? Odd.

Wellwood, to bad his skill is only matched by his laziness. If someone picks him up and somehow manages to light a fire under him then the Leafs will regret this.

As most have stated already, waiving Wellwood is a surprising move to say the least. Even as a "power-play specialist", he should be able to find a niche on a team looking for a little offensive punch. Atlanta comes to mind off the top of my head...

You dont get draft pick compensation for a RFA waiver claim do you?

I'm shocked he wasnt dealt for something/anything if he was going to get waived, unless its to send a message

What the...

Why would you waive a RFA? Just don't tender him a qualifying offer. This is so weird...seems like the Leafs are purposefully giving Wellwood the finger. Steve Sulliven part deux?

Unless you're afraid that he'll sign the qualifying offer.. which I imagine he would.

lol Welly scored like 7 pts in one game against the Rangers 2 seasons ago. He was on fire.

So whats the deal, to injury prone? Kid showed he could totally compete.

Yeah but they don't have to give him a qualifying offer. He can just become a UFA if they don't give him one.

Injuries hampered his development last season. Some team will bite on him...might not be a bad, cheap option if he truly is 100% healthy.

He doesn't do much, if any training offseason. Showed up to camp fat, and is was too lazy to fix that.

Did they really need to waive Wellwood, would the extra 6 days have hurt them that much?

The pro scouts told Fletcher that Wellwood is done and R. Wilson expressed no interest in working with him. It's that simple.
