But to make this at least a somewhat substantive post, I don't like Malone or Roberts and I'd rather not have them on the Rangers so any less chance of that happening is good with me.

Would be good for Tampa Bay if they can get both locked up.

If they sign Malone the bolts will have a good top 6 with Vinny P, Vinny L, Stamkos(?), Marty, etc

This is good because if Malone signs with TB, he's not signing with us. Slats doesn't need the temptation.

Roberts I don't give a **** about.

Yeah, but their blueline and goaltender status is still very suspect.

I agree, with a few upgrades on the blueline and goal could make them a much better team.

So much for Malone being this born, raised, and lifer in Pittsburgh. The local town hero wants a bigger paycheck.

He wanted to stay with the Pens, but they basically said to him "**** off, we'd rather keep Hossa & Orpik". What is the guy supposed to do?

Is Roberts on the lookout for retirement homes?

Fine by me. I'd rather not be the squad that gives Malone the big contract.

Wouldn't he have gone to the Panthers so he could look in Miami Beach then?

And I who thought Tampa's biggest issues were defense and goaltending.

I doubt either of them sign with Tampa before July 1, when they could field offers, but I hope they do. Then Slats wouldn't be able to waste money on an overrated and sure-to-be overpaid Malone.

Roberts is virtually meaningless, though I expect he'll go to Ottawa.

Take less money?

He's not worth the 4+ mil he will get anyway.

I would take him at 2.5 or maybe 3.

I guess i just don't consider a guy who never scored 30 goals in his life worth 4+ mil.

But i do like him.

You mean like Sean Avery

I was listening to the Bolts new owner, Larry not Koules, on Home Ice this morning and he said that the Bolts were going to make a huge splash in FA. Maybe this is the start?

Whatever, if they sign good for them but Malone is still going to July 1st to field offers

I still think Dawes, Gomez, Malone is a great line

Problem is that Dawes and Malone are both left wingers. Don't think it's so easy to switch wings. Prucha was moved from LW to RW this year and... well just look at the results! I play left wing/center in real life and I couldn't play the right side if my life depended on it.

I don't wanna touch Malone, it reminds me when Martin Lapointe was going into free agency and teams lining up to overpay him. Is it just me though or does it seem like Slats is asleep at the wheel here while other teams are being agressive to improve thier club? Did we even hear anything yet about our RFA's? Where they even qualified? Dawes?

I dont see what slats can really do at the moment, honestly. Avery wants to be over paid, Jagr wants 2-3 years ( Unreasonable at his age with the clear down turn he took last year), Shanny is quite done imo, Rozy probably wants to much based on his play last year and frankily during the playoffs and Straka appears Czech or retirement bound. So i really dont see where he can do much of anything until July 1 anyway.

I mean he could do something stupid like sign Rozy to a 5 year 5+ contract we would regret as soon as next year OR trade someone like Anisimov for Bryan McCabe. But he's not, he's not doing anything rash.

Just for the sake of discussion, Malone would be the "scorer" on that line.

So, he could, and probably should be switched to the off wing in that situation.

Having him face the play to receive and quickly release shots/one timers.

It is a little difficult to shoot a puck off a pass when you have to let it cross your body first. I is awkward and unnatural.

Just my opinion.

So, IMO, Dawes - Gomez - Malone could work.

Only problem is, Malone is not really that fleet of foot, and not really a natural goal scorer.

I wouldn't worry about Dawes.

No way Sather will let a rookie who scored 14 goals, walk.

Dawes will be cheap, and productive.

If you worry about any of our RFA/UFA class, i think Dawes is the least to worry about. Almost guaranteed 100% he will be back. Because the compensation for letting him go would be far less of value then keeping him.

There were nearly identical posts regarding Slats sleeping habits last year on July 1st. The Drury and Gomez signings didn't come out till the late afternoon/evening and all day people thought he was sleeping/fishing. Then bam, we got Gomez and Drury.

Slats has this knack for flying under the radar with signing FA's.
