Taking a look back at each teams top PP unit in 1992

As some of you may know, I'm a big collector of past THN issues.

I was looking through the Nov. 6th 1992 issue and I noticed they had teams current top PP units listed.

I thought this might bring up some interesting discussions..(ex..which ones were strongest back then, which ones look best on paper, worst on paper, how they compare against your teams current unit etc..)

Here goes..

Lots of good PP's. Buffalo, Chicago, LA, NYR, Detroit, but the best has to be the Pens.

No Jagr on the Pens PP?
No Gretz on the Kings PP?

That Flames PP is sick, as is the Flyers.

Gretzky was injured at the time.

I think what is most fun is to look at these players and see which ones are STILL on PP units.

Tkachuk
Selanne
Brind'Amour
Joe Sakic,
Mats Sundin
Blake
Lidstrom

Jagr was on the second unit. He was only 5th in scoring for the Pens in 92-93....with 94 pts. The second unit was crazy as well.
Gretzky missed a pile of games that year so he wasnt available when they made that list

Nick's got a deathgrip on that spot for at least the next 2 seasons and hopefully more beyond.

LOL at Ottawa's and Tampa's

Pens, Flames, LA, Flyers, Rangers, Quebec are all sick

Edit: Do you have the powerplay stats/rankings? I would be really interested to see some of the % especially Pens.

I can't recall off hand, but I highly doubt Brisebois was on Montreal's top pp unit back then.

Philly's forwards were ridiculous but the pointmen were lacking. Though I guess Brind'amour wasn't anywhere near his peak yet.

keep in mind this was a few weeks into the season. He was playing on the top unit at that time, but it doesn't mean it lasted the entire year...

Holy crap! I'd say Andreychuk was the reason they were #1, but then there's Mogilny, LaFontaine and Howerchuk. Whammy.

Pittsburgh:

Mario Lemiuex, Kevin Stevens, Rick Tocchet, Ron Francis, Larry Murphy.

Holy crap! 3 for sure Hall of Famers and 2 fringe superstars. This team was incredible.

Quebec:

Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Owen Nolan, Steve Duchesne, Scott Young.
I'd still take Sundin, Sakic and Nolan on my #1 PP unit.

Quote:

Ottawa:

Neil Brady, Sylvain Turgeon, Jody Hull, Brad Shaw, Norm Maciver.

At least they were probably the hardest working #1 PP unit.

Yeah, I'm sure Desjardins, or Schneider would have been on there.

Desjardins was on the top PK unit at the time. I agree that he should have been on the top PP unit rather than Brisebois..but for some reason, at the time of publication..it was Brisebois.

This list is highly inaccurate, lots of mistakes and some of the units don't even make sense.

From what I can remember, and I'm sure there are many more....

Desjardins and Schneider were running the PP for the Habs.

Wesley and Juneau for Boston.

Bure and Lumme for Van.

Reichel for CGY.

Iafrate and Bondra for Was.

Graves for NYR.

Richer for New Jersey.

Fedorov, Sheppard and Chiasson for Det.

I'll say this one again...

when this list was compiled, it was only 2 or 3 weeks into the season....

It doesn't mean that these units are accurate for the ENTIRE season.
