Playoff Race (updated...)

I will try to keep this thread updated as often as possible. I'll make my predictions as to where the Habs will finish this season, and show what it would take for other teams [currently 9 th - 12 th in the East] to get ahead of us in the standings based on those predictions. Basically, this thread should reassure those who fear for our playoff hopes!

We are currently 55 GP, 62 PTS. Here is my February prediction (I made it realistic, bordering on slightly pessimistic not to get my hopes up too high).

*Chicago - WIN
*Pittsburgh - WIN

NY Islanders - WIN
Florida - TIE
Tampa Bay - LOSS
Ottawa - TIE
Atlanta - WIN
Calgary - TIE
Toronto - LOSS
NY Rangers - LOSS
Ottawa - LOSS
Boston - WIN
Carolina - WIN

6 - 4 - 3 in February (ties are interchangeable with OT losses)
4 - 4 - 3 for games not yet played

That would leave us at 66 GP, 73 PTS (7 games above .500!)

REST OF THE CALENDAR:
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
New Jersey - LOSS
San Jose - LOSS
Phoenix - WIN
Los Angeles - WIN
Anaheim - WIN
Florida - WIN
Toronto - LOSS
Colorado - LOSS
New Jersey - TIE
New Jersey - LOSS
Buffalo - TIE
Ottawa - LOSS
Boston - WIN
NY Islanders - TIE
Philadelphia - LOSS
Buffalo - TIE

W - L - T:
5 - 7 - 4

This would leave us at 82 GP, 87 PTS

Enough to make the playoffs? I think so. Probably in 7th or 8th spot, depending on other teams' performances.

If we are currently at 27-20-6-2 : 62 (let's call it 27-20-8 : 62)
Then by my predictions we will finish the year at 36-31-15 : 87

Eastern Conference standings (based on info as of 1:00 AM, Feb. 5th)

GP PTS TEAM
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
55 70 Philadelphia
54 69 Toronto
53 63 Tampa Bay
52 67 New Jersey
55 67 Boston
53 66 Ottawa
55 62 Montreal
53 59 NY Islanders
- - - - - - - - - - -
54 52 Buffalo
55 51 NY Rangers
55 50 Atlanta
55 50 Florida
- - - - - - - - - - -
54 46 Carolina
55 41 Washington
55 30 Pittsburgh

I think we can safely assume that Carolina, Washington, and Pittsburgh will not make the PO's. The 9th-12th ranked teams could all challenge Montreal and NYI for the final playoff berth. Buffalo is known to finish strong. Atlanta could move up with Heatley's help. The Rangers are always a question mark. Luongo could stand on his head and pull a Theodore to get the Panthers in by the back door. Let's see what it would take for any of these teams to bump Montreal out of a playoff spot, according to my (slightly pessimistic) predictions above:

Buffalo would need 36 pts in their last 28 games, 8 games above .500.
Atlanta would need 38 pts in their last 27 games, 11 games above .500.
NY Rangers would need 37 pts in their last 27 games, 10 games above .500.
Florida would need 38 pts in their last 27 games, 11 games above .500.

So for the Habs to finish out of the playoffs... (based on info as of 1:00 AM, Feb. 5th)

1) Philadelphia, Toronto, Tampa Bay, New Jersey, Ottawa, and Boston must remain ahead of the Habs in the standings
2) The Islanders would need to finish at least 1 game above .500 from here to the end of the season
3) the Habs would need to finish 2 games below .500 or worse,

As well as any of the following coming true:

4) Buffalo.......... finishes 8 above *
5) Atlanta......... finishes 11 above *
6) NY Rangers...... finish 10 above *
7) Florida.......... finishes 11 above *

* = above .500, for the rest of the season

Conclusion: Barring a massive losing streak (knock on wood), we're going to make the playoffs.

Stay tuned for updates!

UPDATE
(based on info as of 10:40 PM, Feb. 5th)

Eastern Conference standings

GP PTS TEAM
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
56 72 Philadelphia
55 71 Toronto
54 65 Tampa Bay
56 69 Boston
53 67 New Jersey
54 67 Ottawa
56 64 Montreal

54 59 NY Islanders
- - - - - - - - - - -
55 52 Buffalo
55 51 NY Rangers
55 50 Florida
56 50 Atlanta

- - - - - - - - - - -
54 46 Carolina
55 41 Washington
55 30 Pittsburgh

For the Habs to make the playoffs... *

1) Philadelphia, Toronto, Tampa Bay, New Jersey, Ottawa, and Boston can finish with any number of points.
2) Habs need 23 pts or more in remaining 26 games; must go 3 games below .500 or better. (from now to end of season)

And 4 of the 5 following teams must finish below the Habs:

____________POINTS_____POINTS_______GAMES______GAM ES_____
TEAM............BEHIND........NEEDED.............L EFT........ABOVE .500 (**)
NY Islanders.......5...............29................ ...28................1...........
Buffalo.............12...............36........... ........27...............9...........
NY Rangers.......13...............37................. ..27..............10...........
Florida.............14...............38........... ........27..............11...........
Atlanta............14...............38............ .......26..............12...........

Teams that the Habs could catch up to... *

____________POINTS_____POINTS_______GAMES______GAM ES_____
TEAM............AHEAD........NEEDED.............LE FT........BELOW .500 (***)
Boston..............5...............18............ .......26................8...........
New Jersey........3...............20.................. .29................9...........
Ottawa.............3...............20............. ......28................8...........
Philadelphia........8..............15............. ......26...............11...........
Toronto............7...............16............. ......27...............11...........

As far as the teams ahead of us are concerned, you can play with the numbers a little and see what it would take for us to pass them. Since this was made with the prediction by which the Habs would finish the year with 87 pts, you could see what would happen if the Habs were to finish with - say - 92 pts. For example: as of info from Feb. 5th, Boston or Ottawa would need to finish only 3 games below .500 for the Habs to get ahead of one of them.

* = according to predictions made previously, by which the Habs finish season with 87 pts
** = number of games above .500 needed from now until the end of the season
*** = number of games below .500 needed from now until the end of the season

So if the season ended today we'd be up against the Leafs?

I would rather see the Habs shoot for 94 points. No one with 94 points has ever missed the playoffs; teams with 92 points have missed them in the past... I read that stat somewhere recently, but I forget where.

30 points in 26 games is 2 games over 500. It is very attainable if they really want it.

Edmonton missed the playoffs in 2001-02 while finishing with 92pts and Dallas finished 9th with 90 pts, the west was really strong....It was the year the Habs got into the playoffs (with 87pts) against the Bruins.

I could have shot for more than 87, I admit. However, I just didn't feel it necessary. The West is stronger than the East (at least among teams fighting for the 8th spot).

In the West, the 4 teams ranked 6th to 9th each have 54 GP and 60 PTS. 10th to 12th ranked teams have between 53 and 55 PTS.

In the East, The 9th to 12th place teams have 50 to 52 pts each, and have played at least one more game than the Isles who have a 7 to 9 point lead over these teams.

Basically, the 9th place team in the East would rank 13th in the West. And the 12th ranked team in the West would rank 9th in the East. This also means that if the playoffs started today, there would be one team in the West not making the playoffs even though they are 6 games above .500.

Very true after 8th spot in the east there is a BIG dropoff in terms of competitive teams but in the west there is probably 10/11 teams that could compete for playoffs spots.

I think it is more a matter of pride than anything else. I want to see Montreal accumulate enough points to make the playoffs in both conferences.

Well not a great night for us in terms of playoff positioning...the Isles only get one point but the Sabres won again. I consider them a pretty dangerous team and could give us some trouble in the weeks ahead.

The Isles make up a game in hand tonight in big D so....GO STARS

Well. with the loss of Souray for a period of 4 to 6 weeks, what will be the predictions?

Now an updated list with my modifications :

NY Islanders - WIN
Florida - LOSS
Tampa Bay - WIN
Ottawa - LOSS
Atlanta - WIN
Calgary - WIN
Toronto - LOSS
NY Rangers - LOSS
Ottawa - LOSS
Boston - LOSS
Carolina - WIN

5 - 6 - 0 in February (ties are interchangeable with OT losses)
4 - 5- 0 for games not yet played

That would leave us at 68 GP, 74 PTS (6 games above .500!)

REST OF THE CALENDAR:
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
New Jersey - LOSS
San Jose - WIN
Phoenix - WIN
Los Angeles - WIN
Anaheim - WIN
Florida - LOSS
Toronto - LOSS
Colorado - LOSS
New Jersey - LOSS
New Jersey - TIE
Buffalo - TIE
Ottawa - LOSS
Boston - LOSS
NY Islanders - TIE
Philadelphia - LOSS
Buffalo - TIE

W - L - T:
4 - 8 - 4

This would leave us at 82 GP, 86 PTS

I know NY Rangers are out of play-off spot by almost every experts but watch them if they get a goalie like Burke. Ouch !! They can finish the season at 8th spot.
And what about the rest of the calendar for NY Islanders, Buffalo and Florida Panthers?

That's ok, we could just send an armada of trolls to their board as well. I'm sure you could find plenty of volunteers...

I think that if we can string some winning streaks together that catching the Devils is a good possibility. Without Stevens they are nothing.

57 54 Florida (W)
57 53 NY Rangers (L)

56 47 Carolina (T)
57 42 Washington (L)
57 30 Pittsburgh (L)

For the Habs to make the playoffs... *

1) Philadelphia, Toronto, Tampa Bay, New Jersey, Ottawa, and Boston can finish with any number of points.
2) Habs need 23 pts or more in remaining 24 games; must go 1 games below .500 or better. (from now to end of season)

And 3 of the 4 following teams must finish below the Habs:

____________POINTS_____POINTS_______GAMES______GAM ES_____
TEAM............BEHIND........NEEDED.............L EFT........ABOVE .500 (**)

NY Islanders.......1...............25................ ...25...............0...........
Buffalo..............8...............32........... ........25...............7...........
Florida.............10...............34........... ........25...............9...........
NY Rangers.......11...............35................. ..25.............10...........
(Atlanta no longer considered a significant playoff threat)

Teams that the Habs could catch up to... *

____________POINTS_____POINTS_______GAMES______GAM ES_____
TEAM............AHEAD........NEEDED.............LE FT........BELOW .500 (**)

New Jersey........3...............20.................. .27................7...........
Ottawa.............7...............16............. ......26...............10...........
Boston..............8...............15............ .......24................9...........
Toronto...........10...............13............. ......25...............12...........
Philadelphia......12...............11............. ......24...............13...........

As far as the teams ahead of us are concerned, you can play with the numbers a little and see what it would take for us to pass them. Since this was made with the prediction by which the Habs would finish the year with 87 pts, you could see what would happen if the Habs were to finish with - say - 92 pts.

* = according to predictions made previously, by which the Habs finish season with 87 pts
** = number of games above or below .500 needed from now until the end of the season

Prediction factor:

Habs are 2 pts behind schedule on my predictions, at this point. They are thus heading for an 85-pt season.
