08/09 Avs cap Numbers (Updated Regularly)

Well, July 1st is almost here, so we might as well get this thread started again so we can keep track of how our cap situaion changes with the new signings.

I changed the format a little bit. Instead of trying to guess who'll make the team to fill out the lineup, I've kept the veterans and graudated players that have all but secured a roster spot in the first group, and the others competing for the remaining positions in the prospects and system players group.

Avs season starting roster for reference, and hypothetical roster calculations.

Foote and Liles have been added to the roster.

This gives us 7 forwards, 6 D, and 1 G under contract and a total of 14 regulars returning, with some spots most likely open for a few prospects.

You can take Boychuk off the list as he was traded to Boston.

So, the Avs need to sign five to six more forwards, one more defenseman, and a goaltender. They currently have about $25 million in cap space. That's about $3 million per player. We're not in too bad of shape. I do hope they keep some space open for Stastny though. He's going to command a lot of money next year.

Wow our depth at forward is pretty darn bad. (I'm talking about 3-4 lines.)

We must sign some 3-4 line grinders.

Hopefully Sakic signs for less. over 6 million at this point is just too much IMO.

Looks like the Liles' contract comes with a 4.25 cap hit.
(along with the limited ntc as mentioned by eklund).
Far from official though.

Is it really a sensitive subject? I don't think it is. At this point I'm hoping for $5 million. He earned the rise last season, albeit a little higher than I'd have expected, but that figure certainly should come down for next season (if he's going to continue).

I'm confused - shouldn't Svatos' QO be $1.2 million?

Yes, it is $1.2 M. Not sure where I got the other number, since he made $1.2 last year. Thanks. I had to rush this thread a bit more this year, since I don't have as much free time as I used to, so if anybody notices any more mistakes, please feel free to point them out.

Sertich and Liles numbers have been confirmed and added as well.

I don't know if the Liles number is right.

According to Rick Sadowski (Rockey Mountain News)
It's 4.2 hit (3.7-4.125-4.425-4.55)

For Footer
It's 3mil hit (2.75-3.25)

Gotta agree with nhl33, I don't really think this is sensitive at all. Personally, I hope Sakic waits until we've signed the guys we need to sign and then agrees to something like $4M to $4.5M even though he is probably worth more. If he signs for less, it will just give management more flexibility to improve the team and make his job easier and probably even more fun.

My personal feeling on the Sakic issue is that he told FG to go ahead as if he is not coming back and if he does decide to come back he will make sure his salary fits in. I don't know it is just a hunch. To me it would make sense. Joe is not the type to handcuff his team in such an important time of the year.

Looks like IB's numbers were just estimates, so we'll go with Sadowski's numbers for now, unless something debunks them. Thanks.

Tucker and Raycroft have been added to the cap numbers. I have also added Per Ledin to the Avs roster instead of the players competing for a spot, based on the way FG talked about him, and his one way contract.

I've also changed my mind on keeping Hensick and Jones with the other players competing for a roster spot, as it looks like they will have a spot with the younger lineup.

This gives us 11 forwards, 6 defenseman, and 2 goalies signed and a cap hit of $39,675,000, not including Per Ledin's salary which has not been disclosed yet. Assuming all the players on the roster make the team, that leaves us with $17,025,000 to fill out the lineup, and leave any necessary cap cusion.

Ledin is $600,000 [I have to go in and add him to the tables later tonight, so he won't show up until then]. I also just updated Tucker's numbers.

Sadowski's numbers on Liles and Foote are correct, I had estimates until I got the actual numbers.

Sounds good, thanks for letting us know IB.

Ledins' cap hit brings us up to $40,275,000 assuming he's on the Avs starting roster, along with Hensick, Jones, McCormick, and McLeod.

Wolski's contract has been added to the cap numbers.

Now we still have Svatos, McLeod, and McCormick as RFA's. The team will not have more than 14 forwards, because they will want at least one extra D.

Here's a list of the regulars that I would say are a pretty safe bet to be with the club on opening night.

Wolski - Sakic - Svatos
Smyth - Stastny - Hejduk
Tucker - Arnason - ?
? - Guite - Lappy

So if we assume Sakic and Svatos will be with the club next year, that leaves four forward spots for Jones, Hensick, McLeod, McCormick, Parker and Ledin to battle out for.

Given the way FG talked about Ledin, and his one way contract, it reminds me of the Hlinka sitaution last year, where they brought him in expecting to play him on the big club, so I think him and Parker will most likely be on the roster, possibly as scratchesl.

I think Jones has an edge over Hensick for the 3rd line, and I don't see the Avs wanting T.J. on the 4th, and they seemed to favor McLeod over McCormick last year, so my guess would be that Hensick and McCormick get sent down.

For the sake of a fairly accurate cap number, I'm going to move T.J. down to the prospects for the time being, and do the same with McCormick when he signs.

With this hypothetic roster, it brings our cap number to $42,225,000 with $14,475,000 to spend on Sakic, Svatos, McCleod, and an extra D to fill out the lineup, in addition to any cusion for injuries.

I wonder if Cumiskey is expected to be the 7th defenseman? We almost have enough cap room to add both Sakic and Sundin if we wanted. As long as Arnason is out of the picture, I'm happy. Please trade him.

Idk... remember what Wolski-Arnason-Svatos line did for us last season? I hope they try it at some point of the next season.

If we are kind to the following players...

Sakic (6.0 million)
Svatos (2.5)
McLeod (1.0)
McCormick (1.0)

...we arrive at a cap number of 54 million minus those who won't take a roster spot.

Forwards: (31.9)

Smyth - Sakic - Svatos (6.25, 6.0, 2.5)
Wolski - Statsny - Hejduk (2.8, 0.85, 3.9)
Tucker - Hensick - Jones (2.25, 0.85, 0.55)
McLeod - McCormick - Lappy (1.0, 1, 1.15)
Ledin - Arnason - Guite (0.6, 1.675, 0.475)

Defense: (20.475)

Liles - Hannan (4.2, 4.5)
Salei - Clark (3.025, 3.5)
Leopold - Foote (1.5, 3.0)
Tjärnqvist (0.75)

Goalies: (1.5)

Budaj (0.7)
Raycroft (0.8)

Daniel Tjarnqvist has been added to the cap.

This brings us to 11 forwards, 7 defenseman, and 2 goalies with a cap hit of $42,975,000. Sakic (if he returns), Svatos, and one of McLeod, McCormick, or Hensick will most likely fill out the rest of the lineup.

It looks like Jones, McLeod, Ledin, and Hensick were the ones that won the poll as the final four players most likely to fill out the roster, assuming Sakic and Svatos are with the team, so they have been added to the Avs roster.

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=536471

The RMN may be wrong in it's reporting of McLeod's contract as they have him signing for $522,500, which is less than his QO, and coincidentally the same as McCormick's QO, so they could have mixed up the two Cody's. We'll leave it as reported for now, until it is proven wrong.

This now gives us 12 forwards, 7 D, and 2 goalies under contract with a cap hit of $43,847,500 and $12,852,500 to spend on Joe Sakic (UFA), Marek Svatos (RFA filed for arbitration), and any cusion against the cap for call ups.

At most Sakic should get 5.5 and Svatos 2.5 so do we really need to be 5 mill under the cap when the season starts?

Probably not this year, but the Avs look at the numbers for next year too, when they will have to sign Stastny to a huge contract, Leo and Budaj will (hopefully) deserve a raise too !
