What about trading Bowmesister to Chicago for toews + somone else then signing Sundin. Then trade to edmonton for Pitkanen and maybe sign Hossa.
Win it all this year.

I guess that would put you over the cap.
Still, it seems more could be done here.

agreed if we could dump van ryn's salary even for picks or prospects it'd be a good move and it could happen as i heard after some of the d-men disappear in free agency the fact we have a bundle makes some expendable. and i'd take monty over van ryn.

i think we should have bought out peltonen as well

and i think hossa is the only guy worth spending big money on

The facts: JM loves defensemen, the #1 defenseman isn't signed, trading said defenseman seems to be the only logical move. It just seems like JM would have it taken care of. I can only hope some decent offense comes this way. I, for one, wouldn't be upset to see him go.

Funny mispelling man! I would trade Bouw to the Blackhawks for Toews + 1st in 2009!

Trading Bouwmeester would be disastrous, even hypothetically. If JM has such a hard on for puck moving defensmen, then he will sign Bouwmeester, who is our best puck mover.

I think he's been trying for a while. It's really in Bouwmeester's camp that we aren't sure of whether he wants to sign here. I couldn't understand a reason why he would too. I remember when someone asked him if he would like to stay in the warm weather down here & his response was that he doesn't mind the cold & the seasons up north. Not a thing about liking south Florida or the team! The guy has never said anything that makes me confident he will re-up here.

Exactly, why are so many people convinced that getting him signed is just a matter of paying him more than $5 million? It's entirely possible (even likely) that he wants out, but has class and doesn't want to bad-mouth the organization.

Signing Jay was the #1 priority all year. Even the Horton and Weiss signings were secondary to getting Jay under contract. JM has even stated that his strategy is to build up the defense first. Now, he's facing the possibility of offer sheets on his #1 defenseman, who he couldn't convince to sign on long-term with the club.

It will be a monumental failure if Jay isn't wearing a Panthers sweater this October, and JM will be 100% responsible.

Come on, JM. Get him signed.

Depends on who's coming back .. I can't see JM trading for Spezza given the history between those two ..

Link? Murray should be all over that. Maybe Vermette + Meszaros?

JM should offer 7 million for 7 years and be done with it.

No way is he worth that money. I would trade him before giving him that. The problem is that martin is at the wheel which means we'll get fleeced in any trade.

Indeed.

I don't know Jay, but I don't get the impression it's all about the money.
Even at $5m per he doubles his current salary, if he was passionate about staying in Florida that might be enough to get it done.
I have nothing to base this on other than my gut, but I think he wants out.
If that is the case JM needs to focus on getting the best he can for him via trade rather than wasting time trying to persuade him to stay.

Mike Green just got 5.2 million dollars for 4 years.
Correy Perrey got 5.3 million dollars for 5 years.

Bouwmeester had ATOI above 25 minutes the past three years
-Led the all NHL defensemen last season in time on ice
-Averaged 42 points per season the past three years.

How many defensemen in the NHL can do that and have the size/skating ability to defend the most dynamic forwards in the NHL ?

Here is the list:

Chris Pronger
Zdeno Chara
Nicklas Lidstrom
Dion Phaneauf

I'd rather give Bouwmeester the extra 2 million per year instead of trading him. Who would you spend that extra 2 million a year on anyway ? Another Richard Zednik ?

Trade him. Honestly for all he has done here in Florida, I am not at all impressed. He was hyped up way past what he can do. Beautiful skater, and good defensive mind. But he turned the puck over in crucial points last season. Plus his personality is something that of a Nat and it kind of irks me. Sure he put up 25 minutes a game... who else were we going to put out there for that time? I just feel our money would be better spent elsewhere. He doesn't look as if he's going to break out... we've been waiting 2-3 years.Shop him, trade him. Get the piece's we need to make a run. We have enough D and now with a character guy behind the bench we have the tools to put something together.

I am surprized bouwmeester hasnt recieved an offer sheet yet . JM just needs to keep the talking going with jay's agent . Before we make anymore moves , we need to try to lock bouwmeester up asap.

Brian Campbell money = no thanks. Give me forwards or an elite goalie over that for a Dman not named Lidstrom in his PRIME only.

If you're not impressed with Jay Bouwmeester then everything I have ever assumed here is true. Maybe we should keep signing 34 year old fwds for three years.

Someone was talking about how jay isnt passionate about staying here. Why the hell would he be? Remember the last guy passionate about staying here? I do, he's in phoenix now. This is the worst organization in the NHL and there is a very valid reason they're a laughing stock. I watch this garbage team play as much as anyone else here if not more and for someone to start slagging on bouwmeester as if there is more he could be doing obviously is watching a different sport than I am.
